Matt Smith has now left Millwall and has signed for Salford.
It's about time he dropped down a few levels to actually start games.
It must be demoralising to know you are only ever going to be used when chasing a game.
I was never a fan. The style of play he facilitates is just awful. It's not his fault but as soon as he's on the pitch people get lazy and just punt it long time after time.
i really liked Matt Smith when he played for us and i was very disapointed he left when he did he always worked so hard when he played for us (yes i know he wasnt mobile but he always seemed to cause so much havoc when he came on or started)
yes we have improved without him and yes it was the correct decision to sell him when we did but lets be honest he always seemed to either score or cause headaches and is possibly the best PLAN B weve had.
was a bit different in the dressing room too and it was refreshing to have someone of his ilk at the club
i will always like Matt Smith as both a player and a charachter he is far too good a player to be playing for Salford but at least he will be earning a decent amount with that club i think it quite possible if he plays a full season from the start at that level he could score 25-30 goals.
i wish him well think Millwall are foolish to sell him though

Yes, I think I side with Tomcat, I don't know how much he was on with us but at the time I was sorry to see him go...that said it was the right decision as we can see now
do u know how hard it is to be as good as he is in the air? do you know how strong he must be to be able to be as good at what he does?
the only thing Matt Smith lacked was pace and it was obvious for the whole crowd to see
but to say he wasnt good on a pitch is wrong he was quite remarkable (david Coleman voice) at what he did
hes going to be far too good for league 2 and it isnt his lack of ability that took him there it was prob the money of the nevilles that managed to get him trust me they just bought a goal machine at that level

He was only good at being a nuisance. We had many a discussion on this forum about the fact that his hold up play wasn't actually that good because his touch wasn't good enough.
Literally the only thing he was good for was attacking a high ball. And was he really that good at that? If he was he'd have been the first name on the team sheet everywhere he went... and he wasn't. He's not unplayable in the air by any stretch.
He lacked a lot more than just pace, he is a very, very limited player.
The fact he is now playing in League 2 suggests that is his level. If he's as good as you think he is he'd have been playing a lot more for QPR and then Millwall.
quite clear to see that league 2 for Matt Smith is too low a level for him
like others say a promotion chasing league 1 side more suitable
i think he could be a starter in most league 1 sides well almost all of them if truth be known
Northwest
this must be just a player you didnt like for some reason like with me and Lyndon Dykes you say he didnt get much game time with us not sure of the stats but he was a regular for us for at least 2 seasons and when he first joined Millwall again he played a lot as i saw his name on the score sheet many a time
and if truth be known i wouldnt know who to pick between Dykes and Matt Smith at this present time but when Matt Smith was younger i actually would pick Smith ahead of Dykes any day of the week

I'll hold my hands up I just didn't like him as a player, but I think I have given more than enough justification for that.
For QPR over 2 1/2 years he made 37 starts and 55 appearances as a sub. Again I feel like if he was this unplayable machine he'd have started a lot more.
so he really was a plan B how many goals he score for us just as a matter of interest?

was prob a better player than Smith but i just like Smith for some reason and wasnt a great fan of helguson mybe because when he joined us he was wrong end of 30

Smith got 23 goals in 102 appearances. If you include league and cup he made 43 starts and 59 sub appearances.
Helguson got 28 goals in 80 appearances, including 8 top flight goals. 64 starts, 16 sub appearances.

I always thought that Matt Smith was used a bit like a special teams player and only got on when things were going pear shaped.
As pointed out by northwesthoop Smith started 37 league games but managed to get on as sub in a further 55 games. Whilst he scored 20 league goals he is also credited with 10 assisists.
Smith's most productive season for us was in 2017/18 when he played in 41 games (17 starts and 24 as sub) scoring 11 and getting 9 assists. His actual league minutes played that season was 2,064 which equates to scoring or creating a goal every 103 minutes.
