the defence is all over the place at the moment fragile handle with care sign should be put up the defence has minimum protection though and our left hand flank especailly is wide open kelly is a decent keeper and could do nothing about the goals last night either we have a hard batch of fixtures now and we could slip down the table even near bottom 6 as the table is tight if we cant sort the defence out warburton is relaint on our strikers and thats got him out of jail in a lot of games
I found the first half hard to watch. From the first minuet we didn't seem to get the bounce but the passing was pretty rubbish, no composure and lots of long balls from the centre backs which most of the time will only achieve giving the ball away. I was getting incensed by the amount of times the centre backs would clearly be winning a header, mostly unchallenged but all they did was head it back to Brentford. The Brentford CBs on the other hand where able to pick out their midfielders in these situation, little things like this make such a difference to the flow of the game. The only plus from the first half was Kelly making a good save and only being 1 down.
Second half was much better and we started to get our foot on the ball, deserved our goal for me and looked like we where going to kick on until we where again on the wrong end of an awful refereeing decision. Is it me or is the quality of referee's in the championship woeful? Great pen by the lad and he did look a class apart to be fair. I was surprised that chair didn't come off when cameron did but he actually really impressed me when we was dropped back into midfield, he was demanding the ball and looking to turn and pass forward which is something i think we are missing and was hoping amos would be able to do for us.
Overall its hard to complain because in the 90 mins Brentford where better but the penalty really stopped our momentum. I could see us taking the win and dominating the second half without that.
Priority has to be defensive reinforcement in January
Apart from a short period in the 2nd half Brentford were the better team and the £25 million they spent in the transfer window showed. Jansson was commanding at the back and when you add him and the others they purchased to a squad that already included Watkins and Benrahma it shouldn't be a surprise that they beat a QPR team who spent next to nothing and are heavily reliant on developing youngsters.
Whilst Brentford had the more expensive and better players it was really disappointing that their players also seemed to display more passion and desire than the QPR players.
I think that we we really should be concerned because Warburton's luck has now disappeared and he will now have to rely on his tactical awareness.
Unfortunately as I have said several times before his tactics are lacking and he continues to play a formation that leaves us wide open at the back. Despite conceeding at least two goals a game we still play a system of 2 central defenders and 2 attacking wing backs. Nobody on this site needs to be told that we lack central defenders. At the end of last season our only real central defender was Leistner. Hall is a poor central defender as is Cameron when he has played there. Barbet came in to replace Lynch but isn't much better and Masterson struggles to even warm the bench. We all knew we needed at least 2 experienced central defenders but when you replace one poor player with another it's always going to be difficult.
If you are going to play Manning as an attacking wing back then you must ensure we cover the space he leaves either by playing a third central defender or by getting your defensive midfielders to fill the gap.
Teams have sussed out how poor we are at covering down our flanks and they know that Manning and Rangel are good going forward but both are slow getting back. Reading and Brentford both took advantage but so have other clubs.
Last season Eze started the season well before fading and Chair has done the same this season. Chair should have been rested before the Reading game and his form is suffering.
My expectation at the beginning of this season with our squad was survival and my expectations haven't changed. I fear that some of our promising young players may get sold but if there is any vision at the club and we do keep the likes of Eze then we need to bring in at least 2 central defenders who are leaders with character and authority.
I also feel much the same Warburton has had our strikers get him out of jail We continue to play a leaky goal system and we will concede many more goals than we have so far No clean sheets is poor and it’s only due to wells and hugill we’ve won the games we have Even in a poor league we show how vulnerable we are at the back and teams are now exploiting our weak areas This season is unpredictable and considering we hadn’t kept a clean sheet we’d of gone second with a win It will easy to slip down the table as well as up the table and Leeds will probably destroy us on Saturday
As mentioned above, no matter how good are goal-scoring abilities are, we need to defend better and prevent more goals. Given the way we play then we will always be at risk of a breakaway leading to a goal, but the current squad are not doing enough to prevent sloppy or opportune goal-attempts. Last night's header by Watkins was just one of many examples. When the ball sails over you into the space between you and the other CB then you must communicate and deal with it! January may well allow us to get a decent CB in the transfer window, but it is not certain. What is certain is that until at least January our CBs have to defend better, our WBs need to close down ball-players better, and the midfield players like BOS, Cameron and Pugh need to do more covering. Full credit to Kelly for making some great saves - it could have been a lot worse!
Well on Saturday we will have Hugill back up front I would suspect, but there needs to be a shake-up behind them. No more Eze way out on the wing, the replacement of Cameron & BOS, and much better defending!
I felt he had two players covering him for most of the second half, really boxed in?
They really defended from the front and closed us down quickly all evening...poor old Nakki barely got a look in
For me, whereas the rest of the players were automatically looking to move with the ball or do a quick pass, BOS did neither and allowed Brentford to close him down. I really liked when he would take defenders on and surge forward because he has great body strength and is a real pain for opponents; but this season he has failed to deliver. Instead it has been players like Manning, Kane and Pugh who have been doing this. I am not sure what is needed to get BOS back to his full potential, but it needs to happen quickly now for him as otherwise Warburton will drop him.
I do agree that Brentford came with a game plan to disrupt our play and they succeeded! This was a real test for us and sadly we failed.... I often wonder how managers and coaches try to rebuild the confidence of their teams and impose improvements in their play....
