If you have a listen to MW on the official talking about fixtures...it sounds to me like he's saying we just don't really have the squad to consider going on a cup run...on the one hand his teams take time to warm up so the more cup games we can play early on the better....on the other hand we could benefit from not being in the cup and being a bit fresher for some league games?

If ever there was a season to not bother with the cups, especially the league cup, it is this one. Nobody will be in attendance, everybody would understand the reasons for the exit, nobody will really be bothered as they will excited for the season starting the next week anyway.

You are right northwest the EFL cup does seem a bit pointless this season. In previous years teams might have covered most of their costs from the attendance money plus any prize money. This year the only money that teams will get seems to be from prize money and the £5k for being a first round loser hardly seems to be worth it for any club.
Obviously to win the Cup is something that any club wants but with prize money of just £100k to the winners it doesn't seem financially viable when you consider all the travel, hotel and other expenses.

I didn't know the prize money was so low, it really doesn't make any financial sense to go very far in the cup as you would more than likely end up losing money even if you were allowed crowds to attend. For me the Plymouth game is just another training game but I do think we will see a near full strength squad with possibly a couple of U23 starting to give them a chance to prove themselves .
I had no idea the prize for the winner of the cup was only £100k - cheapskates! I can see most clubs using their U23s for each game and not fussing when they are knocked out!!
