I like Smyth and there is no doubting he really wants to prove himself and make the cut. But, I just never feel confident he's going to become a BIG player for us. I hope he proves me wrong, but I just don't know what his best position is and ultimately I can't see him being anything more than a bit part player.
I really liked him when he burst onto the scene. Somehow he then never got a chance with us. It sounds like he didn't make a huge impact on loan so this is a big season for him. I still have hopes.
I suspect that Warburton's '3-4 more signings' includes Manning & BOS; so that means one other player since Dickie is a done deal it seems. Could the other signing be the midfielder Sam Field who was on loan at Charlton last season from WBA? The talk of us chasing a midfielder has continued over the weeks and, despite having decent cover there, I am assuming there is no smoke without fire.... Personally, I would be looking for another striker or another defender.
Dykes away on international duty so Oteh up front. We really need another option.
Do we know whether Arsenal played any of their first team or was it just their U23's? As I have said previously it's never worth reading too much into friendlies but conceding 4 goals won't do much for the confidence of our defenders.
In respect of Oteh it appears that Warburton has now lost any faith and is looking to sign another striker on loan.

Our official site says it was a "strong Arsenal line-up". It would have been non-international first team players with some reserves.
Our trialist has been confirmed as Tom Carroll.
I imagine a deal for Carroll could follow, especially as Warburton seems to fancy Amos playing further forward now Eze has gone. Carroll certainly fits the Warburton way of playing and would do no harm to the squad.

I haven't seen Carrol play since he was last here on loan but whilst he seemed to be able to ping a pass and run all day he was only about 20 and very small and lacked the physical needs of playing in the Championship. Hopefully, he is a bit stronger these days and won't get knocked off the ball quite so easy as he did back then.
Bright Osayi-Samuel was among the scorers as Queens Park Rangers were beaten 4-3 by Arsenal in an entertaining behind-closed-doors friendly at London Colney training ground on Tuesday, September 1, allnigeriasoccer.com reports. At the moment, it is not yet known the Arsenal players that participated in yesterday's friendly but central midfielder Miguel Azeez had hinted that he would be involved against the Hoops. As for Queens Park Rangers, Osayi-Samuel, Aramide Oteh and Luke Amos were named in the starting lineup.
Ossie Kakay gave the visitors the lead but the Gunners netted three without reply to make it 3-1, before Osayi-Samuel scored to reduce the deficit. The 22-year-old Nigerian-born winger performed excellently against Premier League opposition and showed off his skills to Arsenal first team coach Mikel Arteta. The Gunners are among the teams that sent scouts to run the rule over Osayi-Samuel in the 2019-2020 season but have not followed up their interest in the winger, who scooped Queens Park Rangers' Young Player of the Season and Goal of the Season awards last term. A move to the Premier League for Osayi-Samuel may be on the cards before the close of the summer transfer window as he has been linked with other top-flight teams.
