Credit indeed to Italy because, despite the cynical fouls, they displayed great attacking football - the opposite of what we have come to think of Italian football to be! Southgate's selection seems to have been to try and nullify the normal Italian play through the middle and catch them on the wings. It worked well but it was at the expense of much attacking play by England. When we take into account the amount of minutes played and the fact it came down to who failed the most at penalties then we see just how close we were to victory!
