Great 3 points and lots of positives. Marshall did well on debut, Barbet and Dunne were rocks at the back and Johansen showed his class. Willock is a star and was outstanding. The front two found it difficult to get away from the WBA centre backs but battled away. I don't want to be too hard on Gray but I always think he could do a bit more.
The one player who I thought was struggling today was Dickie. He finds the movement of fast nippy strikers very difficult to handle and that was shown again today. It didn't help that he got booked early and he played as if his next challenge would see him get another booking and result in a red.
I have waited until now to add something as I was shattered when I got back last night. I chose the only route with no rail engineering work, only to find that a crucial set of points had failed. I tried driving to the station beyond the points but could find no parking, so I went onto W12 instead. Crawling my way there through London I then spent 20 minutes looking for a parking space (because I arrived so late) and only managed to see the kick-off because of the 1 minute applause for those who had died of COVID - not an ideal start!
The game in the first half was not good from our perspective as we neither 'doubled up' or ball possessors or looked for space to receive the ball, and we failed to work their defence. It has rightly been pointed out that Dykes and Gray did not link up effectively; but I could say the same of Johansen and Field in their link-up play with the defence. Still, at HT we were in the mix still. Everyone expected Gray to be substituted for Austin after HT and that did make a difference; but the overall team performance from the start of the second half was great. Willock took on more, Johansen & Field moved into spaces to create movement from the back up the field, and Wallace & Adomah made themselves known. Nobody took the honours for the first half, but we did for the second!
This was a game fought without any prisoners being taken, and the ref did try to keep the game moving (despite some odd decisions), but Dike's hard push on Barbet's back that meant his head collided with the hoardings was a definite card. It was near the linesman and right by the 4th official, plus the ref was watching, so why was Dike not even carded for a viscous foul? The goal almost blew the various roofs of the stadium! The reaction to it was incredible and loads stayed on afterwards to cheer the side as they took the plaudits. A great win! I then set off for home, getting quicker out of London, onto the M25 and then A21 - only to have a nasty accident ahead of me close the road for 1h 45m. Following QPR is not easy!
