It really comes back to getting quality referees who make it plain that time-wasting will be punished, and then do just that! I am guessing in this modern age that an edict is required from the FA....🙁
Best option might be to take the time control away from the refs and have a game clock like they have in American Football. This is operated by 3rd party who stops the clock whenever the ball goes out of play or there is an injury. It would never happen tho because the games would probably last over 3 hours and tv would veto the move.
I'm not sure it would have mattered last night because we could have played until midnight and still not scored.
I’m a big fan of this idea and think it should trialled asap. I am usually a traditionalist but time wasting has got so bad and refs are clearly not going to sort it. Fake injuries, substitutions and big delays taking goal kicks and throw ins will still break up the rhythm of the game but will no longer run down the clock as they do now. This works in both forms of rugby I believe so why not football?
After our win over Sheffield United in which they finished the game with 66 per cent of possession, their manager Paul Heckingbottom said: "So they had 32 minutes and 19 goal-kicks, averaging 30 seconds a time. So nine and a half minutes. So the ball was in play for 20-odd minutes minutes of their 32. That can't be right.

We managed to score and to create a few good chances in our 32 minutes. He should be worried about why they didn’t make such good use of their 58 minutes - not how we used our 32. This just makes him look like a sore loser!

Good point that upsets Heckingbottom's sour grapes!
