Right now, on the eve of the season I cannot see us finishing above mid-table. We’re four players short — an alternative winger for when Smyth’s asthma flares up over the winter, a flexible forward to play from the left, a left back and a striker — from being a competitive team. Equally, the mid-table position factors in for the possibility of Martí taking a job earlier in the season should someone be prematurely sacked. Expect us to flirt with relegation and play-offs briefly at various points within the season, but it’ll be 12th-15th from us this season.

Sheffield Wednesday, should be well clear of trouble this time round, and will build on their excellent late season form.

If Sunderland get a goalscorer then they’re potentially in business this season. Stocked with options in wide, attacking areas. The axis of O’Nien, Browne & Neil in midfield (with Ekwah, Embleton and Bellingham alternatives in there) is as good as any of the best teams in the division. Keeping Roberts and Clarke fit will be important. Question marks over the manager, but should he fail there is sufficient quality within the squad to suggest that any successor could take this team towards the top of the league. That said, young team, still a bit raw and naïve. Top 10 for me.

Watford are another tricky one. They had a disappointing season last year (apart from day 1 - which we don't need reminding about!) and it looks like the same again. But I still can't see them finishing below us.

I'd have Stoke a bit higher too, once the last team is added we can make 1 adjustment per turn up to kick off on Saturday

I’d have Plymouth 2nd from bottom and swap them with Stoke. I think Rooney is dog 💩 and the players won’t play for him. Stoke will still have bad season but probably survive again.
