QPR 2-1 Ipswich Town:
QPR held onto a 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town after Jamie Mackie and Luke Freeman scored either side of half time, even though Ipswich scored late on to make for a nervy finish to the game.
Rangers lined up in a similar style with: Alex Smithies in goal, a defence of Alex Baptiste, Captain Nedum Onouha, Jack Robinson and Jake Bidwell. The midfield consisted of Josh Scowen, Massimo Luongo, Luke Freeman and Pavel Wszoleck. Whilst Jamie Mackie played just off of Conor Washington.
In contrast early pace setters Ipswich Town lined up with: Bialkowski in goal, a defence of Connolly, Spence, Iorfa and Krudsen, a midfield of Ward, Skuse, Downes and Waghorn, whilst Joe Garner and David McGoldrick led the line for the tractor boys.
The game started in a very scrappy way with a slow pace, however Rangers seemed to control the ball and Ipswich invited a lot of pressure onto themselves. Conor Washington had the best chance of the early exchanges seeing his edge of the box shot easily saved by Bialkowski.
Rangers won a couple of corners and Alex Baptiste had the best chance with a header which narrowly went wide, however Wszoleck was able to keep the ball in play and smashed it across the box, for the keeper to get the smallest of finger tips on it and push it out.
Massimo Luongo, Josh Scowen and Luke Freeman started to show their dominance and soon started to control the midfield and the tempo of the game. Luongo in particular had many mazy runs which the Ipswich defence were unable to control, however the final ball was missing.
Josh Scowen then had a cross turned shot saved by Bialkowski from the corner of the box
Jamie Mackie’s work ethic and determination caused Ipswich a lot of trouble and he won a lot of balls, however his final ball was again missing.
Ipswich’s best chance of the first half game on the 41st minute when Martyn Waghorn found Callum Connolly from a corner and had his header from the centre of the box saved by Smithies.
After a good run from Luongo, he passed the ball to Wszoleck, who then picked out Jamie Mackie on the edge of the box, who was able to keep his composure and find the bottom corner of the goal with his first time finish and put rangers 1-0 up.
Rangers then went into the break deservedly 1-0 up.
Straight after the restart Luke Freeman had a tricky run through at the Ipswich defence, where he was able to beat 3 players, he then shot with the outside of his left foot and found the bottom corner. Rangers were then 2-0 up and controlling the game.
Rangers continued to dominate the game and create chances, Luongo having the best opportunities with a couple of his long range shots troubling Bialkowski.
Jamie Mackie, Pavel Wszoleck and Conor Washington were then replaced by Kazenga LuaLua, Matt Smith and debutant David Wheeler. LuaLua instantly linked up with Smith and Wheeler and Wheelers header found the back of Smith’s head however he was unable to convert the bouncing ball and his shot was somehow tipped onto the bar.
Rangers soon took their foot off the gas pedal and invited pressure from Ipswich and in the 88th minute Celina curled in a long range shot leaving Alex Smithies helpless, making it 2-1 and with the five minutes injury time made it a nervy finish for QPR.
Rangers ran down the clock and held onto a deserved but somewhat nervy victory and have maintained their 100% home record on Loftus Road’s 100th birthday.
QPR Player Ratings:
Alex Smithies 7- Didn’t have that much to do, however an expected solid display from our number 1.
Alex Baptiste 8- Looked a lot more comfortable at right back, could have scored in the first half, he also won a lot of aerial battles.
Nedum Onouha 7- A solid display from our captain on his 200th appearance for the R’s, didn’t make his standard one mistake for the game.
Jack Robinson 7- For a converted centre back he looked very comfortable and won a lot of balls up field and his notorious long throws caused a few problems.
Jake Bidwell 6- Started the game a bit nervously, saw a few crosses come to nothing, however this improved towards the end of the game.
Massimo Luongo 9- The man of the match, he looked calm, energetic and organised, his forward runs troubled the Ipswich defence and had a few long shots which on another day could of easily gone in.
Luke Freeman 8- A very slick and silky display from Freeman, who took his goal very well. He has become a fans favourite and looks a real good signing.
Josh Scowen 8- He controlled the midfield, he saw a lot more of the ball compared to past games. It looks like we have finally found Shaun Derry’s replacement, easily our best bit of business of the summer.
Pavel Wszoleck 6- A very inconsistent game for Wszoleck who faded in and out of the game. He rushed his final ball; however he did have good involvement in the first goal.
Jamie Mackie 7- Caused Ipswich a few defensive problems, in what was a very typical Jamie Mackie display. He took his goal very well, however he doesn’t have that knack of beating players like he used to.
Conor Washingotn 7- Caused the Ipswich defence a huge amount of problems all game, on another day would of easily scored. His presence was missed when he was replaced by Matt Smith.
