QPR v Brentford:
Matt Smith and Luke Freeman scored two dramatic injury time goals for Queens Park Rangers to claw back a vital point in Monday’s West London derby against Brentford.
Rangers lined up in an unusual 4-4-2 formation, which meant Alex Smithies was in goal, a back four which consisted of: Jordon Cousins, Alex Baptiste, Jack Robinson and Jake Bidwell, whilst the midfield was made up of Jamie Mackie, Josh Scowen, Captain Massimo Luongo and Luke Freeman. Whilst Conor Washington and Idrissa Sylla led the line for Rangers.
In contrast Brentford lined up with Bentley in goal, a defence of Clarke, Egan, Bjelland and Barbet. A midfield which consisted of:Mokotjo, Woods and Yennaris. Whilst Jozefzoon, Canos and Vibe led the line for the Bees.
The game started and Rangers started the much better side, with Sylla and Washington linking up well however they weren’t able to carve out any real clear cut opportunities. Brentford continued to grow into the game and it was real end to end action with both sides having chances in what was becoming a fierce West London derby.
In the 10th minute the game was forgotten and the whole of Loftus Road were on their feet to applaud and respect the legend Stan Bowles.
Brentford then had the first real clear goal scoring chance through Canos, who unleashed a curling shot from the edge of the area , however Smithies produced a fine save to be able to deny him and keep the score 0-0.
Rangers then had their best effort through Jamie Mackie, who received the ball from Sylla on the edge of the box, Mackie then beat his man but couldn’t keep his effort on target and the ball ballooned into the jeering Brentford fans.
In the 38th minute Sylla linked up well with Washington and the ball set up nicely for him to hit it on the volley from at least 20 yards but his effort was straight at Bentley who easily collected the ball.
The half time whistle then came and Rangers and Brentford went into the break with the game all square at 0-0.
Straight after the restart Scowen’s header was diverted to Sylla, whose effort unluckily hit the top of the crossbar and bounced away to safety and the score remained 0-0.
Brentford then threatened through Watkins however his low effort hit the side netting, but this should have served as a warning to Rangers and 2 minutes later Yennaris picked out Vibe in the middle of the Rangers box and his turning effort fired past the helpless Smithies, putting Brentford 1-0 up.
After this goal the ascendancy was defiantly in Brentford’s favour and Rangers were holding on, Yennaris had a looping effort which just went over the bar and the score remained 1-0.
Matt Smith then came on to replace Idrissa Sylla and this changed Rangers game plan completely as they instantly became a lot more physical and straight away Smith’s presence made a difference as his perseverance caused the ball to strike Bjelland’s arm and the rebound fell to Scowen and his effort was again blocked by an arm however the referee Mr Martin refused to give anything despite the pleas from the R’s players and fans.
As Rangers pushed forward for the equaliser it left them vulnerable to the counter attack and Vibe had many efforts to put the game to bed however he simply couldn’t get the better of Alex Smithies in the Rangers goal.
But in the 81st minute Brentford were able to break through Sawyers he picked out Vibe who coolly slotted the ball home to put Brentford 2-0 up and send their fans in to dream land.
The game seemed to be dead and buried with crowds pouring out of Loftus Road with many supporters leaving early wanting to beat the rush expecting the inevitable defeat.
However the few that remained saw that 4 minutes injury time was to be played and in the 2nd minute of injury time Matt Smith’s presence finally paid dividends and he was able to head the ball in from close range and sprint back to the centre circle with only minutes to go.
And the remaining supporters were soon to be rewarded as the ball was played in from a deep free kick witch Alex Baptiste flicked on to find a onside Luke Freeman who was able to poke the ball home from 3 yards to send Rangers into jubilation and plunge Brentford into the depths of despair.
When the full time whistle arrived Rangers felt they could have got a winner but it was not to be and Freeman’s heroics gave Rangers a somewhat undeserving share of the spoils.
Player Ratings:
Alex Smithies 7- Can’t really be blamed for the goals, but didn’t make some important saves when relied upon.
Jordon Cousins 5- Again was substituted from a role which doesn’t suit him, but with the injuries we have, it’s a case of needs must.
Alex Baptiste 6- A okay performance from Baptiste who got the flick on in our equalising goal, he does look a lot more comfortable in the middle of the defence.
Jack Robinson 8- My man of the match, he was our best player on the night, he won many tackles and aerial battles and is looking better and better every week.
Jake Bidwell 5- Another average performance from Bidwell, who seems to struggle playing against his old side.
Josh Scowen 7- Our best midfielder, however he was prone to making a few mistakes which could off easily been costly.
Massimo Luongo 6- Luongo had a few runs which caused Brentford trouble, but he didn’t overly impress.
Luke Freeman 6- Scorer of the equalising goal was important, however only his set pieces seemed to trouble Brentford’s defence.
Jamie Mackie 4- He had one effort in the first half, but other than that he wasn’t effective at all and was quite rightly substituted.
Idrissa Sylla 6- He linked up well with Washington at the beginning of the game but Brentford soon wised up and sussed him out and was replaced by the more effective Smith.
Conor Washington 6- Washington ran at the Brentford defence a lot; however it was another nearly night for him.
Substitutes:
Matt Smith 7- His physical presence changed the game when he came on and this led to our comeback.
Kazenga LuaLua 5- Didn’t affect the game at all when he came on.
Pavel Wszolek 6- He also didn’t do that much to affect the game, had a few runs which won us a couple of corners.
