QPR 1-4 Preston North End:
It was an afternoon to forget in W12 as Preston North End ran riot at Loftus Road and Rangers suffered back to back defeats for the first time since December.
Going into the game Rangers named the same starting eleven which lost at Brammall Lane against Sheffield United the week before. With key absentees still missing from Steve McCaren’s side.
In contrast, new signing Jayden Stockley led the line for Preston, as he adjusts to life in the Sky Bet Championship.
Preston started the game the brighter of the two, with the visitors having the most threatening chances and on the 14th minute Alan Browne hassled down Josh Scowen on the edge of the R’s box, following a poor kick from Joe Lumley before the ball eventually fell to Stockley who produced a sublime curling effort round Lumley to put the Lilywhites deservedly ahead.
Going behind in this manner should have kicked started Rangers’ game but it didn’t have the desired impact as the away side continued to dominate possession and forced Eberechi Eze and Pawel Wszolek into weak efforts which were comfortably saved by Declan Rudd.
At the half time whistle QPR knew they had to improve and McClaren rung the changes, Matt Smith was introduced into the fray. But he simply didn’t have the desired effect because in the 68th minute Preston doubled their advantage through Jordon Storey who was able to take advantage of some poor Rangers defending.
The R’s tried to claw themselves back into the game and when Smith’s header cannoned off the woodwork the home crowd realised it wasn’t going to be their day. With 10 minutes remaining Browne who was involved in the opening goal sealed the victory with his close-range header.
Two minutes later substitute Smith created a glimmer of hope for QPR when his flicked header trickled past Rudd. But with minutes remaining on the clock Brad Potts added the humiliation factor to the score line.
This result meant Preston travelled back up the M6 with a bigger gap between them and the relegation spaces, whereas QPR failed to take the perfect opportunity to make ground on the desired playoff place.
Player Ratings:
Joe Lumley 5: A poor error of judgement for the first goal, not Lumley’s best performance in a R’s shirt.
Darnel Furlong 5: A unexpected under par performance from Furlong.
Toni Leistner 5: He struggled in the first half under the constant pressure from the Preston front line.
Joel Lynch 7: Again, not his best ever performance but is my man of the match, I felt Lynch is probably one of the only players who could leave the game with some credit.
Jake Bidwell 6: A okay performance from Bidwell but under the high standards he has set this season.
Jordon Cousins 4: A really poor performance and was rightly substituted at half time.
Josh Scowen 5: A bad mistake for the first goal but recovered his composure and was okay for the rest of the game.
Pawel Wszolek 6: A very quiet afternoon from Wszolek who didn’t really seem to do much right or wrong.
Eberechi Eze 5: Another quiet performance, considering he has played almost every game this season perhaps some fatigue is kicking in.
Luke Freeman 6: If anything, positive was going to happen from QPR it was likely to happen from Freeman who played okay.
Nahki Wells 5: A weak performance from Wells who struggled against a strong and fast backline.
Substitutes:
Matt Smith 5: Didn’t have the desired impact when he came on, took his goal well.
Bright Osayi-Samuel 5: Wasn’t really on long enough to impact the game.
Paul Smyth 5: Again wasn’t really on long enough to impact the game.
