QPR finish the season in 19th, staying in the same position for the final 3 games
That is 3 places and 5 points worse off than last season but ultimately we finished 11 points clear of the drop which is all that matters.
By scoring in the last minute we managed to move past the 50 point mark to 51 points; meaning we beat the previous worst season we had at this level of 2005/06 when we only got 50 points.
Despite ending the season on a high the fact remains this was only our 3rd win in our last 22 league games.
We picked up just 17 points in the second half of the campaign. If that form carried into next season we'll only get 34 points over 46 games.
It was our first away win since we beat Forest away in December. That was also the last time Matt Smith had been on the winning side in the league prior to today; he ended a run of 15 appearances for himself without tasting victory.
We did a league double over Sheffield Wednesday. The only other team we managed that against was Ipswich. And ironically the last time we did the league double over Sheffield Wednesday was 2003/04 when of course we also beat them at Hillsborough on the final day when securing promotion.
From being 2 points outside the play offs at Christmas we ended the season a whopping 23 points outside the top 6. It really was some slide in the second half of the campaign and the Position Tracker below really does illustrate the rise and then fall of QPR in 2018/19
Next season will already be our 5th consecutive season in the second tier and our first without parachute payments
In the 4 seasons since relegation we have only finished in the top half once (12th) and have now languished between 16th and 19th for 3 years
We lost exactly half of the league games this season with 23 defeats and of course 2018/19 will long be remembered as the season when we lost the opening 4 games for the first time in the clubs history and lost 11 home league for the first time in the clubs history too.
Player Stats:
Appearances:
Luke Freeman missed the final 2 games to only end the season with the joint most league appearances with 43, tied with Toni Leistner
Eze and Lumley both only missed 4 games and Luongo was 5th with 41 league appearances.
After playing all of the first 40 games of the season Jake Bidwell missed the last 6 games to only end up 6th in the list
Key Players:
Officially Oteh had the highest win ratio with 100% victories in the 2 games he appeared in.
However if we only look at players who were involved in a minimum 20% of the league games it suggest Angel Rangel was the key player this season with QPR winning 45% of the games when he was on the pitch.
Geoff Cameron was close behind with 42%. Interestingly next on the list is Josh Scowen with 37% victories when he played. Luongo had 34% followed by numerous players tied on 33%
Worst Players
Baptiste, Ingram, Kakay and Smyth all had 100% losing records but again that is slightly unfortunate given the minimal amount of games they played.
The player with the lowest winning percentage of those who played at least 20% of the games is Bright Osayi-Samuel who only won 15% of the time in 27 appearances.
Next was Matt Smith who only won 1 in 5 games this season in which he appeared. Ryan Manning at 22% and Darnell Furlong at 24% were the other players that the stats suggest are weak links.
Those same names top the charts for being on the pitch when QPR lose.
Osayi-Samuel had to get over defeats 70% of the time when he appeared. Manning is 2nd in that list losing 67% of the time, followed by Matt Smith on 60% and Furlong on 56%.
You can perhaps explain Matt Smith losing a lot as he is thrown on in games when we are losing to try and go Route 1 but how you explain the plight of Bright Osayi-Samuel. Are we really worse with him in the team?
And with Rangel being a chief winner and Furlong a main loser does that suggest we should really be looking to keep Rangel at right back for next season?
