I'll transcribe the best I can and update this post later.
I imagine you could probably just watch Steve McClaren's press conference from this time last year and hear the same thing. 'I love youth', 'we want to play attractive, attacking football' etc etc etc
Here is what he said:
What makes you think you can succeed where others have failed?
hoping to play a role in reaching the clubs visions over next 2/3 years. I've been in this situation before with Brentford, having to build, having to play young, having to use connections in the game. Style of play to entertain fans.
What went well in the interview?
Honest, Spoke my mind, spoke truly. Good conversations, I liked what I heard about the bigger picture at the club. Stability, moving the club forward, very impressive.
Asked about operating on a lower budget?
Club have had well documented problems. My job; I know exactly what we can and can't do. Hopefully the clarity is there and we can go and do our job
Can the aim next season, given the money spend and that will be spent by other clubs, be anything over than survival?
You never say anything to the players that would cause them to accept average. Be the best we can be. Actions rather than words. Work with the squad, developing players. Staffs job to do that, create that environment, take one match at a time.
Ruthless release of players, some with 3-4 years at the club, how involved were you?
Only been here a matter of days but we understand the financial situation, we understand what we need to do as a club to give it that firm foundation, tough decisions of had to be made and will have to be made, all for the good of the club, that is a clear message that has to go out to the supporters and to the players, doing the right thing for the long term welfare of QPR. Hopefully plans work out, we can get young players, we can work with the players we have here, use the market wisely, see where that takes us.
Will you be active in terms of recruitment?
We'll be active, we'll be looking at players, young and old, experience and youth, you have to have maturity in this tough division but at the same time you want youth and energy and passion, if we can get that balance right we're in a good place. There are some young players out there who'll benefit from playing at QPR, get some senior names who can add their game knowledge to a young group of players. Again, get the balance right and see where we are.
Did you see much of QPR, can you improve?
Won't talk about previous managers, everybody comes in with their own ideas and best intentions. I know how I want to play, how I want players to react. I know the intensity I want in training, it is my job to make sure that is implemented an enjoyed by the players.
Any more staff?
I'm sure there are many good staff here, need to give them a crack to show how good they can be, looking forward to working with them. John was a player I tried to sign at Rangers. Neil I've known a long time, worked at Arsenal at highest level. Knows about developing players, hopefully play a key role.
What can you say to QPR fans who may be disillusioned with recent years, can you give them hope?
Yes, I hope their passion is still strong, give more info to the supporters about our plans, give them clarity. Tell them what is going on, help them enjoy supporting the club. Hopefully that will be the case going forward.
We'll have preseason planned. Will speak to Chris Ramsey about who will be ready, who will need a loan, everybody is part of the club, we'll look at everybody. We'll use the transfer market wisely, loan market wisely. Introduce a style of play, structure plan of work to do that. Get the environment right, this is where they come to work, make sure they enjoy it, challenge them every day and makes sure have done a job at work but enjoy it.
Balance is the key word (repeats himself about youthful 'exuberance' balanced with maturity, who can 'mentor' them). Have to maintain a level of quality every single day. Players should enjoy the summer break because they will be working hard come June whatever it may be
Are you excited?
Absolutely. I really enjoyed the meetings with the owners, chatting to Lee and Les. What we have to do now is take the club forward. But every club says the same, actions speak louder than words.
