Watching highlights we were all over the place at times Nearly 8000 actually quite a good crowd for a cup game like this Problem is going to be we can’t score goals on a plate Portsmouth and us had 4 shots on target and they scored 2 Any defeat is hard to take, but we should of won this quite comfortably really and as usual we just didn’t turn up in a cup game Warburton is not happy with the team after this one and will probably take it out on them on the training pitch today
I don’t often come away from a game fuming, but this was one of them. You can have all the possession and half chances you want, but it’s just a complete waste of time if you’re going to get the final ball wrong every time and then give away a totally needless penalty.
But above anything else, I’m just completely done with being the scapegoat club for every lower league side to play, knowing they’ll get a straightforward victory. Once, just once, can’t we take this damn competition seriously? I mean, we’re not going to go up or down, so apart from mid-table mediocrity, what else do we have to play for or look forward to?
ive just seen the second goal... Barbet does absolutely nothing to try and stop the goal and all he had to do was run a little faster than a jog to intercept the cross. Unbelievably bad defending, you would see better at a under 10's game!
I wouldnt pick Barbet but if you do play him then it has to be alongside Leistner with Hall just in fron of them. The problem is that Barbet is Warburtons man and that means he will keep his place.
There has been media-led comments condemning Leistner's performance today. Even if you ignore the difference he made last Saturday, he offered a lot but it all comes down to a moment of stupidity when he tried to manhandle Marquis in the penalty area. I am pretty sure that Leistner was the most annoyed with himself... I might also mention at this point that Barbet has had TWO such moments of stupidity that have cost us two goals! For the second goal made on the break, as QPR pushed forward for a goal, Leistner was caught lacking pace - something we all know; but watch Barbet as he runs casually back watching Leistner lose the race, at no point does he look to see who is around him and looks amazed that Harness was able to slot home an easy goal unopposed! I agree with stoatey on this: Barbet is good going forward, good at distribution, even good at blocking shots, but he is a suspect defender!! I fully expect visiting teams to switch their attention from Manning (who was perceived as our weak link) to our CBs....
A lot of the problems lie with Warburton who seems to have forgotten the simple things and he wants the players to do things they clearly aren't comfortable with. The first thing our centre backs need to be able to do is defend yet Warburton has a fixation with playing out from the back. If thats his main goal then you may as well play a couple of midfielders as centre backs.
For me football is a simple game, the goalkeeper keeps the ball out of the net, the defenders stop the attackers and pass to the midfielders who create the chances for our strikers who put the ball in the net.
Warburton doesn’t seem to get That most of our players are not good enough to play his style of football It worked at Brentford because he had some real talent Some of our players are good but as stoatey points out, they are used to playing football the basic way We get found out too much with this system as when it ticks against lesser teams it’s great to watch,But when it don’t we make silly mistakes at the Back and upfront But bigger teams work us out too easily and so do others
I feel that we're being overly negative here. So far we're doing better than most expected, having sold everyone that we could get a fee for. We're mid-table, playing good football and creating loads of chances. Overall I think Warburton is working miracles under the circumstances. I agree that we need to improve our finishing and stop giving away goals but I'm very happy with progress to date. We stand a chance against most teams - I don't expect much from the Sheff Wed game but a point or even 3 is not impossible.

I would only point out that Barbet was brought in at Warburton's behest, so he must still rank him; but I feel he was brought in for his ball-skills, rather than defensive skills.... As Ghost rightly points out, it is still early days (luckily) so the coaching team has time to address the defensive issues. It is a tricky one, because Leistner is a worthy contributor to the defence, but the high press used means there will be times when his lack of pace is found out. He cannot drop back as that risks the threat of catching opponents offside. Perhaps having Barbet more aware of situations developing and players storming forward may be enough!

I'm with Ghost that some of this criticism is OTT. Yes the cup defeat itself is very disappointing but overall I'm impressed with Warburton. He has transformed our squad whilst making a profit and we are now a LOT better to watch.
I get what you are saying stoatey that players should do their basic jobs but I'm personally happy to see us try this brand of football and if we stick with Warburton for 2/3 years he will have less square pegs in round holes and we could become a joy to watch. Players also need to still build confidence with this style. Tomorrow is only league match 6 of the season. With such a overhaul of staff and playing style we almost need to wait 20+ games to judge us this season.
When things click I think any team in the league will struggle against us. The problem is when things go wrong we can look vulnerable. Warburton clearly wanted to bring in McKenna and he would have made us a real contender. As it stands we could well still be a contender it is too early to tell.
McKenna is a target as warburton saw our weakness Maybe a bit harsh but we look rubbish in defence at times We play nice football to watch and I like warburton too He’s your typical heart on your sleeve sort of bloke Yes they are a new set of players and hopefully it will click in the end Portsmouth result was poor and I’ll get over it eventually
