Dykes is very much what it says on the tin and did the Scots proud. He ran, chased and was physical although so was Keiffer Moore for Wales. For me the difference between the pair is Moore offered more of a goal threat and does well in that lone striker role. Dykes is much better in a front two and his partnerships with both Ched Evans and Charlie Austin have really helped him.
In respect of England I like the 3-4-3 system but because Sterling and Kane looked off the pace it meant we had no real threat.
I would also go for a 3-4-3 and line up
Pickford
Stones Maguire Mings
Walker Mount Rice Chilwell
Sancho C-Lewin Grealish
That is an attacking line-up that should provide far better service into the penalty box. (I would have Foden, Sterling and Phillips come on as subs.)
The choice of Maguire who hasn't played since early May would be a big call for Southgate but I understand the issue. If Maguire doesn't play against the Czechs then his lack of match fitness would make him a doubtful choice for any future games in this tournament and as a result Southgate would be pilloried for including him in the squad.
I like the 4 across the middle and it gives us the pace we need out wide with both Walker and Chilwell who are good wing backs. By playing the 3 central defenders he can drop either Rice or Phillips and this allows either Stones or Maguire to move into that space and bring the ball forward.
I would love to see Southgate start with your frontline but his staid attitude and the players lack of international experience probably rule it out. Kane is Southgate's captain and I just can't see him being dropped. I think it will be a struggle for him to also contemplate dropping Sterling or Foden but he might replace one of them with the more creative Jack Grealish. My preference would be to play Foden but Southgate does like to stay loyal to his more experienced players and I think he will stick with Sterling and Kane.
Hopefully, we get a decent performance from whatever team he chooses.
