Thank you kingfisher, I've not been able to catch much of this match so that is great insight after the Forest debacle that preceded it.
The only thing I can add comment on is regarding Hall, who definitely this season doesn't seem the same player he used to be, which is perhaps understandable after 18 months of injuries. If he was wearing a mask I wouldn't know it was the same player who came on the scene for us 4 years ago. He seems to get where he needs to be just a fraction too late and looks as slow as Leistner at times. You don't often see him making last ditch challenges or blocks as a result.
Well I have sat down and watched the full 90 minutes and have to say it was end-to-end stuff at times. A few points:
Derby have a phenomenal home record, so to even draw there was a big result.
Without Barbet it was left to Amos to make the rash challenge in a dangerous position, and we paid for it with Waghorn's excellent free kick. Have to say though that only one player in the wall made a decent jump to assist Lumley.... I do like Amos but he does keep making rash challenges. in many ways he reminds me of Dele Alli, where emotion sometimes gets the better of common sense in his commitment as he works hard in midfield.
Osayi-Samuel played well, getting under the skin of the Derby defenders which is what Warburton would have wanted (even if his yellow card foul was unnecessary). OK his positioning when out of possession is still not that good, but I thought his tracking back to assist the defenders was great.
Yet another Championship referee who lets far too much go by him. For example, just before Half Time, Amos got the ball in our half and Lawrence was (rightly) adjudged to have held onto his shirt to prevent him moving, but (wrongly) Lawrence was not given a yellow card for a deliberate foul. Then there was in the second half a clear push on Eze in the penalty area that was ignored. However the referee did award what felt like a soft penalty at the end of the first half, so perhaps these things do eventually even themselves out!
Both teams tried to retain possession, with QPR the better at it, and both sides were equally dangerous on the break. Taking both those statements into account, our defence was good in this game at much of the defending and quickly recycled balls. It is hard to believe this was a side that had been beaten so comprehensively such a short time ago and on a bad run.
I was impressed by Pugh's efforts at the front of the 4-4-2 formation. He covered a lot of ground and it was no surprise he eventually went off for Wells as he must have been knackered!
Other subs: It was only a 'like for like' at 71 minutes as a tiring Amos was replaced by Scowen. So both substitutions looked sound.
It must be murder trying to pass the ball around if you are a Derby player! The slightest hint of passing back to safety and they are heckling their own side...
Does anyone else feel that Hall is still not as good at CB defending as he was, or is it just that next to Lynch-gate anyone else looks great?
Like many others I have been critical of Lumley's ball control, but today he looked a lot more relaxed and that probably allowed him to focus more upon making some fine saves!
Finally, a draw was a fair result, and for a team that has been on a bad run that must feel like a victory!
Interesting comment regarding Pugh because I struggled to work out what position he was playing. He seemed to take up that position behind Hugill but in advance of the other midfielders. Originally my son and I went for 4-4-1-1 then settled on 4-5-1 but it's interesting that you went 4 -4-2. I think the formation was part of the reason that Derby found us difficult to cope with. Whatever the system was it seemed to work.
I think that Hall is a better defensive midfielder than centre back, however, because we are short of centre backs Warburton has to persist with him in the CB role.
Our penalty did look a bit soft and I would have been peeved if it had been given against us. However, it was a typical sloppy challenge by a forward player that some refs give and some ignore. It's one of those challenges that the home team tends to get awarded but not normally the away team.
