The fact the new season is just a month away shows just how important it is to get some of our transfer deals completed.

Regarding transfers the issue in a lot of cases is that the players and their agents hold all the cards these days. The easy part of any deal seems to be the seller and the buyer agreeing a fee. After that I would have thought it was just a case of agreeing the players t&c's but this now seems to be a long drawn out procedure.

I accept that players have to do whats right for them and their family but getting some of these deals over the line is becoming very laborious.

I'm not sure if we have arranged any decent pre season friendlies but should we get some new faces it will be important they are ready to play in those games.

I would think pre-season training really starts in earnest next week? We certainly do not know who else will be coming in and must indeed suspect Eze and BOS (at least) will be snatched before the transfer window slams down. So we will have to cope with a less experienced squad that has newcomers looking to fit in. This is where Warburton must work some magic to ensure they gel quickly! I cannot say I am even considering clubs who can thrash us in warm-up matches (as we always seem to play badly), and I am instead worrying about getting a decent start in such a contrary division...

Goode > Amos > Dykes

That really improves the spine of the team.

Permanent deals is so much better than loans too.

The issue remains we are no closer to knowing where we stand with Eze, BOS and Manning with little over 3 weeks until kick off.

With less than 2 weeks to go I thought it was worth summarising the current squad again. I think everybody acknowledges we need 3 or 4 more signings at least. The squad of course looks a lot weaker now with the exit of Eze and Leistner.

We don't have players in great numbers and the players in blue are basically U23 players. The midfield looks especially weak.

Barnes is apparently on his way to Hibs on a season-long loan, although we are over loaded with goalies.... I would say that Bettache should probably not be regarded any longer as U23, after all he has performed so ably in the senior team. (Of course that may all be academic if he goes out on loan as I expect.) Another one who would probably go out on loan is Oteh, assuming a second striker comes in. For what it is worth, I still feel that Masterson is fully capable of assuming Cameron's mantle in DM. [Write that down Mr Warburton in case you forget.] Also, if BOS is a striker then surely so is Shodipo? (Is it worse for the midfielder count now...?) Nitpicking aside, you are right in saying we are lean on depth in the squad. I still count Bettache as U23 as he's not played/started in the first team in a proper match yet.

I copied this from my Dream R's list so Shodipo is counted as a midfielder on that for numbers

Although I think he is actually counted as a midfielder on the official site.

I watched the highlights of our recent U23 game against West Ham and Bettache didn't play any part in that game so I assume he is now classed as part of the senior team.

Out of interest the U23's set up in Warburtons favourite formation of 4-2-3-1 and were encouraged to play out from the back. Unfortunately, a bit like the senior team our defending was a comedy of errors and losing 5 -0 flattered us. It really did look men against boys and I don't remember us ever threatening the West Ham goal.

Last season I thought Frankie Domi and Charlie Kendall both looked promising so I'm not going to write our youngsters off just yet but lots of improvement is needed before any of them challenges for a a place in the first team.

The squad numbers have been confirmed.

Barbet moves from 29 to 6.
BOS given 11 which is hopefully a good sign.
Chair gets 10 as expected.
Dickie is 4, replacing Hall.

In a strange move Cameron goes from 5 to 20?!

There is no current No.5 or No.7, which suggests further incoming transfers.

We have often mentioned the huge gulf between Championship games and U23s, which there most definitely is, but it would be good for our U23s to be actually doing well so we know there are promising stars of the future...

The issue I suppose is that a lot of these youngsters are still developing both mentally and physically and they are making that huge initial jump from junior football in the U18's to playing against fully developed players who are on the verge of first team football. That move from the U18s to the U23 Development squad is major because some of these lads are still boys and they are coming up against players who are maybe a year or two older but physically that bit bigger and more powerful. It's that sink or swim time where they either going to make it or just drift away.

When you see a player like Joe Gubins who despite being just 19yo he seems even further forward again. He has probably progressed past U23 football and now needs a loan to get regular first team games. Gubins is on the fringes of our first team but is unlikely to get a game in the Championship because he is down the pecking order. To get the experience that he needs to progress he now needs a season away playing in the lower leagues
