Bonne has found his level in League 1 and only flattered to deceive when playing in the Championship at Charlton.
In recent years I have struggled to understand what criteria we use when we pay money for strikers. Players like Washington, Bonne and Dykes had never been prolific goalscorers apart from maybe one flash season. Peterborough and Charlton couldn't of believed their luck when we came waving the cash for Washington and Bonne respectively.
When we signed Washington he wasnt a prolific goal scorer with his form in League 1 around a goal every 3 games. Of course when he played for us his record in the Championship was a goal every 7 games. Now he's playing for Charlton in League 1 his record is back to 1 in 3. That's his level.
Bonne is cut from the same cloth as Washington because in League 1 and the lower Leauges his goal exploits are around 1 every 3 games. However, when you look at his record in the Championship it drops to 1 in every 5 games.
We can probably add Charlie Kelman into this list because his record prior to signing for us was a goal around every 5 games in League 1. There was nothing in his record to suggest he would score goals reguarly and having watched him play for our U23 I remain unconvinced.
In respect of Dykes he has many qualities but like the others he's will never be a regular goalscorer. His record in Scottish league football was a goal about every 6 games. Playing for us in the Championship his record has actually improved to a goal in every 3 games. In all honesty it only started to improve once he was teamed with Austin who is constantly telling him where to run and giving him constant encouragement.
I find it very strange that we sign these players and expect them to become regular goalscorers when they have never done that previously.
In respect of Bonne I'd be more than happy if we can recoup the £2m we paid for him.
