The EFL will be using 5 subs for the remainder of the season
Following consultation with Clubs, the EFL Board has agreed to increase the permitted number of substitutes to five in all Sky Bet EFL fixtures taking place from 12 noon on Friday 20 November for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.
Regulation 33.4 has been amended to permit:
Championship Clubs to name up to nine substitutes in their matchday squad, with five permitted to take to the pitch in any fixture. League One and League Two Clubs to name up to seven substitutes in their matchday squad, again with five permitted to take to the pitch.
Personally I prefer 3. Using 5 subs upsets the flow of the game and changes half the team from the one that started the game which I think is too many. It also means managers don't have to be as careful and tactical with their changes.
I understand the injury concerns and I think it has been changed now ahead of 8 matches in December alone. But 3 just works for me.
It certainly benefits the top clubs more, with their depth of quality in the squad. It also probably helps a lot in nullifying a red card, as you can bring on 5 fresh pairs of legs to compensate!

Exactly, it removes the careful consideration of which subs to use, and when.
When chasing a game a team blessed with attacking talent could end up with 6 strikers on the pitch if they wanted. And conversely a team holding on to a lead could take off every attacking player and replace them with five big defenders.
That is the element I don't like. Subs normally have to be used wisely at the right time to try and swing the balance of a game. Now that is a lot easier.
The only way this will work is if they keep the same rule as last season, where you can only make the 5 subs in 3 separate intervals to prevent it from becoming something similar to an International friendly. Personally I've never liked the 5 sub rule, but it's interesting that the EFL brought it back whilst the Premier League refused (unless they've done it in the last few days and I missed it?)
I wonder if we'll take advantage of the 5 sub rule this season, as last season we never made more than 3 in any of the games.
I just wish they'd left it another week to allow this rule as this will suit Watford a lot more than it'll suit us tomorrow.
I don't think the premier League have agreed to it, because there is such a disparity in squad strength that the lower teams are against it.
Imagine you are 1-0 up against a below par Man City and they bring on Aguero, Gundogan, Torres, Bernardo and Fernandinho.
It favours better teams with big squads. And as I said above it makes it easier to try and turn the tide of a game by changing half the team!
As for QPR Warburton has constantly been making a point of us having so many matches in a short space of time, but as you say @rangerboyb he didn't use 5 subs last season, but will he now?
