Thanks for that post @tomcat75! I was working every Saturday (and every hour in between it felt) in the first half of the 90s, so I saw only a couple of games; and in the second half of the 90s I was back working abroad - so it was even worse in options to attend! You forget how good players like Baker and Penrice were as they scored despite the tackles slamming in!!
simon Barker for me is a legend not only did he bleed blue and white
i actually forgot just how many goals he scored for us
and to boot a great bloke who i somehow met in Majorca 1992 on a dancefloor when i was only 18 thought i was seeing things i was half cut and thought that bloke looks like bleedin simon barker so i went over to him and said
"are you Simon Barker"
he replied "yes"
i said "i thought i was seeing things what are u doing here in Santa Ponsa Majorca?"
his reply "its pre season were on holiday"
me "you here with the whole squad?"
him "no just Brian Croft over there"
i looked over and Brian Croft who was a fringe squad player we had bought from chester for 60k was trying his luck with the woman i later pulled he wasnt happy with me when i took her off the dancefloor he was worse for wear on the drink but Barker seemed pretty sober and genuine good egg
back to the convo
me "im not gonna lie mate your one of my heroes im QPR thru and thru, now i have heard a rumour your leaving dont go"
this was after i read a snippet from the sun that he was off to pastures new as he wasnt in the team at that time and was possibly off to Reading
him "im going nowhere mate dont know where u heard that"
me "the sun"
him "im not going im gonna fight for my place at QPR i love it at QPR"
me "this is why your my hero you can tell you love the club i just wish i was playing with you instead of having to be a reserve at Brentford do me a favour Simon send a scout to come resuce me i will play with Brian Croft if i have to"
he laughed we shook hands then i pulled the bird Brian Croft was after and it was obvious Croft was wanting to have a go at me but Barker was holding him back and playing peacekeeper
