Linked to the On This Day Thread it has raised an interesting question/debate for us - what makes or defines a player as a club legend or club hero?

Some players are revered by fans despite playing for the club far less than others who are not held in such high esteem.

Is it simply the amount of games you play?

The amount of time you spend at one club?

Do you have to achieve something?

Is it how you play?

Does attitude on the pitch affect things?

Then there are players like Clint Hill who are already seen as a legend during their time here... whereas some are maybe only appreciated as a legend years down the line when hindsight kicks in.

Nedum Onuoha for example has been the captain of this great club for a few years now and has played over 200 games during nearly 6 years with the club. Not seen as a legend.

Compare to Paul Parker - most see him as a club legend but he played only 156 games for the R's.

The likes of Les Ferdinand and Trevor Sinclair also played far less games for the club but are unquestionably QPR club heroes.

So what makes a club legend?

Great question. Here's a first crack at it.

I think there are 3 types:
- The huge stars: Marsh, Bowles, Thomas, Francis, possibly Taarabt
- The loyals: MacDonald, Gillard, Clement, Hazell
- The 3rd one is harder but is to do with attitude/effort/never-say-die/leadership/affinity with the fans. This where the likes of Hill, Derry, Mackie, Bircham, etc. qualify.
Obviously some qualify in 2 categories or even all 3 like Kevin Gallen.

In me era my legend's are MARSH BOWLES FRANCIS MCDONALD PARKES CLEMENT GILLARD MASON.
Others would come under possibly HERO'S FERDINAND THE WHOLE ALLEN contingent STAINROD SPRINGETTS KENNY GODDARD MACKIE HILL.
And I have probably missed loads out
But it's a tricky question what makes each category skill attitude commitment.

It really is a good debate.

It is also incredibly subjective with each fan having a different view to others.

I agree with you both that there are probably categories players fall into.

That still doesn't explain why certain players are overlooked

Another example would be somebody like Matthew Rose. He was with the R's for a decade playing close to 300 games yet you never see him even nearly mentioned as any kind of legend.

Good call separating it into legends and heroes. There is definitely a difference.

Those players who can't be put into the other groups.
But its such a personal choice.
Another LEGEND is without doubt COOKIE gave up his cut of transfer fee to help the club he supports.
How many player's would do that these days.

This is an interesting debate, and I would like to add another dimension to it! Does anyone else feel that it is easier to become regarded as a 'legend' (or even 'hero') if they are between the sticks (because of those dramatic saves) or a striker (because of all those goals)? I do think the players between the strikers and the goalie do can get overlooked when proposing accolades..

According to my dictionary a Legend is someone or something that has become famous or well-known, usually as a result of a distinctive or unique characteristic or skill.

I have watched the R's since the 60's and whilst we have had lots of good players who became heros and lots of loyal players who were also heros there is only one legend. That legend is of course Stan Bowles!

But then what about somebody like Simon Barker? Definitely agree with kingfisher that it is easier to become a legend if you are a glamour player, score lots.of goals, are in the public eye etc.

Would agree too these are legends Ghost but it is interesting to note that they are all forwards. What about 'back-room' legends!?

I saw them both and I would class them as very good players but not in the same league as Stan who IMO is the only QPR player who should be classed as a Legend.

I saw Don Masson who wasn't too bad but Billy Mason was a bit before my time!
