The worst job in football has to be officiating a match at any level. The referees and his assistants rarely get praised even when they've done a good job.
Over the last few seasons we have seen some really poor decisions and not just in matches involving QPR. On Friday night we all saw a clear handball but somehow the referee and his assistant all missed the incident. However, on Saturday there was an even better reason for suggesting the officials who run the game really don't have a clue.
The game was Wigan v Cardiff and at the start of the game the officials did their checks of both goals and found one goal to to be 2" higher than the permitted 8 feet. At this stage I'd have expected the officials to order that the groundstaff sort out the problem before the game could start. That wasn't the case however, with referee James Bell who on finding that it could take 2 hours to remedy decided to get the goal line technology adjusted to take account of the taller goal and start the game anyway.
FA Law 1, regarding the field of play, stipulates goals must by eight foot tall by eight yards wide and state that if a crossbar becomes displaced or broken, play must be stopped until it is replaced in position - and if it cannot “the match must be abandoned.”
No doubt that Wigan will find a big fine coming their way but will the FA do anything about the officials?
We had a Premier League official on Friday and he got a lot of big calls wrong.
The hand ball in the first half was a massive miss. The Andy Carroll challenge on Roberts was arguably a red.
Others have been worse.
There is no sign of a clampdown on time wasting whatsoever. They still wave their arms about, only add 4 minutes unless something massive happened, book the goalkeeper in the 93rd minute and repeat.
After the goal post issue last week at Wigan the same thing happened at the Hull v Birmingham game this week. Rather than have different goal heights like the Wigan/Cardiff match they got an angle grinder and chopped one of the goals down to the correct size.
Both grounds also have rugby played on them and it's possible the change of posts each week is causing an issue.
