It remains a departure from what the club is supposed to be doing, he has zero long term value to the club, but needs must.
Interesting quote in the article:
“He has been training at Forest so he will come straight into contention for this weekend’s trip to Cardiff.”
In the last fortnight Fox and Colback had to wait and prove their fitness to the sports scientists... but now we are already in a panic so that's gone out the window!
Yes we need Cook and Colback right now, but are we the only going giving out 2 year deals to players of this age?
Aren't we making another FFP mistake tying ourselves down to these players for next season as well?
Depends on the player. Cook and Colback are consistent footballers, who tend to keep themselves very fit and whose game isn’t predicated on pace. So theoretically you won’t see a major drop off in either after the first year. It’s different if you’re giving them out to the likes of Adomah, who’s now finished as a footballer simply because he hasn’t got the legs to keep up anymore. Equally, because Cook and Colback play in the centre of the pitch, you can surround them with legs to disguise any immobility that may exist after a year. I think this is very good business. You need accountability in clubs, and I say this sensitively, you need men as well. And these are two men. The youth policy is all well and good providing you’re consistently selling them upwards. It’s pointless if all you’re doing is signing players that are physically/mentally still children or players in their 20s that have played about 10 professional games. We’ve seen over recent years that this bunch of players only performs when it’s propped up by adults holding them to account. You’d hope these two can have a similar effect to Cameron, Austin and co

Very true, especially on the comparison to Cameron coming in. It does feel very similar right now to when McClaren first came in, we hoped the youth players would step up, we realise they aren't good enough, we get a few early batterings and sit bottom of the table and then bring in a few older heads to get us moving up the table. It did work then for the most part with Cameron, Rangel, Hemed, Wells etc. Hopefully it works now too. There is no denying we need experienced players to try and shift the mindset around the club. We are beat if we concede first and that needs to change.

I think the McClaren comparison is spot on. For first half of that season we were hard to beat and the experienced players in that team held the younger boys to account. At this stage, I think we have to be looking to replicate that first half of the season and hope it endures longer than it did under McClaren.
kingfisher would be good to get Steve on the pod later in the season as he’s a Hastings lad. I was coached by a lot of the lads that he played junior football with, and from what has always been said in close quarters was that he wasn’t the one seen to be destined to be a footballer. That instead was a guy called Liam Upton. Equally the lad that played Centre-Back, Josh Jirbandey ended up on trial at Peterborough and Borussia Dortmund. They had a very very special team when they were at Parker and won the nationals in their last year.
Steve Cook is the experienced centre back that we've needed since Balogun got injured last season. Cook like Balogun might lack mobility but he will get the defence organised and the bonus is that Cook's a leader.
Even if Dunne wasn't injured and out for the foreseeable future the signing of a player who has undoubted leadership qualities makes sense.
Signing players like Fox, Cook, Bergovic and Colback is clearly only a short term solution but Ainsworth only has a short time to get us sorted or he will be out of a job. IMO The club is being failed by Chris Ramsey and his Development team who aren't doing a good enough job to identify and recruit quality youngsters into the club.

I had no idea he was a Hastings lad jrperry1882 ! That gives me an extra incentive to have him on ASAP!!
He looks a good stop-gap, especially as Jimmy Dunne is going to be out for weeks more after his surgery...
