Why is it we never have a calm build up to the start of the season
It seemed to be ticking along nicely a couple of weeks ago
And now it looks like we’re having to press the panic button now the reality the season is approaching us
It’s never straight forward at QPR
When you compare the current squad it's not much different to the squad from last season and arguably the likely starting line up for WBA is no better quality than the team that struggled last season. Whilst Nardi has started well we haven't seen enough of Celar to judge whether he's the goalscorer we're missing, we can only hope they're an improvement on Begovich and Armstrong. As for Bennie, Hevertton and Morrisson they look decent but I'd imagine Marti sees them as no more than squad replacements for Kakay, Drewe and Albert.
Playing teams like Fulham and Spurs in pre season highlighted our weaknesses even more but against Premiership teams that have so much quality that's going to happen. What will have concerned Marti the most will have been our lack of creativity and poor finishing against Reading. We had loads of possession but in the final 3rd we were blunt and never looked a real threat. Our left side looked particularly weak and we got punished from a Paal mistake.
Without Chair and Willock our creativity and goal threat is minimal. Smyth for me is too lightweight and we saw his frustration as he struggled against the physicality of the Reading players. Our front men of Dykes and Frey work hard but they will never be prolific. Frey once had a decent spell in Belgium but that was 4 years ago and Dykes has only scored 10 or more in the league once in 8 years of playing in Britain. We do have some decent youngsters like Kolli but like Armstrong last year hes inexperienced and he would benefit from a loan to get the game time he needs.
This season is about Marti rebuilding and changing the way we play but it's going to take time and some players who can produce in the final third.
