stoatey I can’t see him playing either Cook or Clarke-Salter against Cambridge. So I’d expect Dunne to move across and play alongside Morrison. I’d keep Paal in the team as punishment and play Santos at right-back. I think Celar will probably remain in the team given how abject he was Saturday, the idea being that it’s a perfect opportunity to get a goal and begin to embed yourself. Lloyd will play. Varane will probably play. Think he’d be well advised to leave Andersen out given the injury to Chair at the moment.
We’ll lose at Sheffield United as well. Plymouth at home already a big big game. Don’t win that and we could go without a win in the first five.

I wouldnt have any issue with the players you mention starting against Cambridge. In respect of Lloyd, do you see Marti playing him wide and then moving Kolli in that central midfield /No. 10 role or do you see him as a partner up front with Celar? I have always thought that Kolli would be more effective in that central role and given the green light to roam around like Chair.

stoatey Would Kolli not be out of the game given that he went off with a hamstring injury on Saturday?
I’m unconvinced Martí will play with a front two unless injuries necessitate it. It will be 4-2-3-1 pretty much all season to facilitate Chair’s entry into the team. I do think that, if you consider who are centre forwards are, that we would be better off playing a traditional 4-3-3 with runners from midfield and wide players who look to fizz the ball into the box. But because Chair is our most creative player, and you don’t want him stuck tracking full-backs who advance, we have to play 4-2-3-1 or a 3-4-1-2. But like I say, I don’t see Martí going to back three even if we do have the personnel for it.
So given that, I think will see Kolli continue to play wide cutting in. He maybe a 9 in the future, by right now, because we play 4-2-3-1, we need our centre forward to operate as a backboard to a basketball net rather. And quite simply, Kolli’s game is not suited to that, and I think he lacks the maturity at the minute to play with his back to goal for almost the whole game. I think this is where Celar will struggle too, given that most of his goals for Lugano were from movements off of the last defender. His heat map as well shows that he’s a penalty box player, he’s not a back to goal facilitator.
I remember being at Scunthorpe at home in 2010 and hearing a heated discussion between a man and his son about the merits of Heidar Helguson. The son despised him, the dad lauded him. I was always ambivalent back then as an early teenager, but as I’ve got older I’ve seen the merits of him and come to appreciate him more. He is precisely the type of striker we need now. Someone who backs in, plays with his back to goal, who is happy getting it into feet or in the air, who just simply rebounds the ball to his he attacking players playing off of him.

I didn't realise that Kolli had a hamstring injury but on that basis I agree he won't be playing. Providing his injury isn't too serious I'd like to see Kolli go out on loan to a League 1 or League 2 club to get the experience he needs. He's still young but it's vital he learns that if you give the ball away in dangerous areas like did continually against WBA then you can get punished.
even at 1-0 up I thought West Brom looked better than us, fitter and a lot smarter in midfield, they had a man free every time and kept getting in behind our full backs.
We did have chances at 2-1 to get level and again at 3-1 we had chances to get back in the game but really West Brom fully deserved the win
I thought the game exposed a few of our problems especially at full back and in midfield, am hopeful Varane can fix a few of the midfield issues he looked decent when he came on Celar struggled although nice lay off for the goal, he'll need time to settle and would be nice if we created a chance for him
I agree daveb, West Brom did look fitter and smarter but I also thought they looked bigger and stronger. Several of their players were man mountains who we couldnt get past. The guys who marked Celar and Smyth in particular seemed huge and neither of our players could compete physically. In fact we looked lightweight all over the pitch.

stoatey and we’re only going to get more lightweight with Dembele and Saito coming in.
daveb part of the reason why they looked so much better in midfield was due to how our midfield was set up. Andersen was excellent with the ball all game, but out of possession he didn’t sit in on Mowatt and occupy him. This is absolutely imperative when you’re playing with a t 10 in a 4-2-3-1. By running around and pressing he caught our attention for putting in maximum effort and looking committed. But in actual fact he caused problems for the rest of the team. He opened space up for Swift to drop short and collect the ball two and subsequently made Colback and Field’s job difficult, because it meant that the space in front of them for Swift and Mowatt couldn’t be squeezed without exposing the back four.
In possession Colback and Field were the problem. Not only did they not circulate it effectively enough (Field in particular), they also failed to make third man runs off the ball. If you’re watching Burnley tonight, you will see Josh Brownhill do precisely that for the first goal. Runs off the back of the midfield and he’s in. Burnley are playing 4-2-3-1. The role of Brownhill should be a lesson to Field, because that is precisely the role he must fulfil this season. 1. To add volume to the attack. 2. To distract defenders paying too much attention to Chair, who can then be freed up to either collect from deep or cause damage in the space that Field’s runs opens up. He must play more vertically if we are to succeed with this formation
