I think this is a good move. He was our last Premier ship wages player. I know we probably paid a chunk to pay him off, but hopefully this frees a bit of money for a new player.
He clearly was not going to play and no-one else was daft enough to take him off our hands. I assume that the pay-off was a good amount less than the rest of his contract which is about the best we could hope for.

From £8 million player and predicted future England star to leaving by mutual consent, millions of pounds richer himself and his team a division lower.
He is and was a very good player Reminds me a lot of Clarke Carlisle Lots of problems outside of football and shows how even a rich young man with everything and still go off the rails Wish him well and he sorts his head out
This is one case of whatever happened we as a club could never win
He was fighting his personal deamons and never seemed to be able to shake it. Getting rid of him in the summer or any time before would’ve made us look heartless. However he’s apparently made huge steps in his personal life (absolutely fantastic for him and hopefully he continues to make huge improvements for the sake of himself and his family) but ultimately the correct decision to let him go as he still seems to have gone completely missing (even when he is playing!).
Good luck to him for the future, and please let us get someone in on a much smaller wage who can do a slightly better job on the pitch for us!
Good move for both him and the club. No doubt he has made a few bob in the process and will almost certainly find another team. Could be set to wear green and white hoops rather than our blue and white hoops.
