The last few matches have got me thinking again about how fine the margins are in football.
Bristol City - a late penalty that should never have been given turned a win into a draw
Cardiff - Hoillett's non-goal could easily have been given turning a win into a draw
I suppose we shouldn't get too excited by the win or too disappointed by the draw but that's hard when you're looking over your shoulder at the bottom 3.
Definitely agree that fine margins is very apt this season.
Had Birmingham beat us they've had gone 3 points behind us but instead they ended up bottom when we beat them.
Burton next week is the same point scenario, beat them and we are 9 clear but lose and we are right back in the scrap despite a decent result over Cardiff.
Yet at the same time if we can put a few results together a top half finish isn't even that far away.
Managers jobs are decided on 1 result here and there. If we hadn't turned it around against Cardiff Holloway was staring down the barrel. It appears to me that all a win does these days is buy the manager a few more games/weeks before the pressure is turned back up.
The Championship is a very hard league to play in - both physically and mentally. The games come along at a relentless pace, resulting in injuries and suspensions, and the scores are often unpredictable. All of this gets forgotten by the Boards as they review a manager's success. All Board want glory and so do the fans, but all tend to lack patience in achieving that glory. Fine margins deciding results cut little ice methinks with the Boards, and I think we will see a few more jobs yet going vacant!
