I suppose we can only hope the scouts have had a really good look at him. This is our level for a bit, back to the good old days of lower league rough diamonds. Lets hope we can find another Sir Les!
I’ve watched Newts play for the majority of this season, and he’s the sort of player who runs himself in to the ground for the team as well as who scores some pretty good goals. However this is his first season in League football so a bit of a gamble to sign. The one game he’s struggled in was Reading in the FA Cup (which is the sort of level we’d need him for if we sign him)

That would be my concern too - it is probably very difficult to move up to the Championship from the lower leagues.
I honestly think a lot of it is down to the coaches that take them in and what they do with them, I believe we have lost some players as we never had the staff in the background helping them to develop and adjust to the higher league. We do now, Paul Hall has a proven track record and the structure seems to be working.

Can't do any harm I suppose. As long as we remember TROY HEWITT who we handed a two and half year deal and had to buy it out. But surely the new scouting regime must have done the groundwork.

Very good point actually.
The issue with signing lots of 'cheaper' players and giving them a chance is that there will be a few that don't work out. We will then end up with a lot of players sitting around again the more that don't make the grade.
You run the risk of ending up with lots of players on 2 1/2 year deals you don't fancy after 6 months.
Wheeler could also be heading down that route already if reports are true. Borysiuk is already on that list as a good example of a low fee gamble but still costly if they aren't good enough.
Re signing cheaper players that do not work out: Would only add that we now have the more pragmatic Lee Hoos managing the contracts, so I would expect either a 2-year contract with a review after 12 months that includes a get-out clause, or a 12 month contract. If players want to take the challenge of playing with QPR in the Championship then surely they should equally be up for the risk that they may not make it?
He has had an ok season at Stevenage with 16 goals from 51 games (1 goal every 3 and a bit games) but he is older than Connor Washington and his goal scoring record in the lower leagues is worse than Connor Washington. Newton would be a huge risk who is not even prolific in League 2.

In fairness this is largely due to the fact that he had to do most of the work himself last season as the majority of players didn't want to know. I'd compare him to someone like Mackie (but who scores more goals) with the workrate and determination to do well and want to win. A firm crowd favourite in his first season above Non League football. Let him stay at Stevenage for another year to learn more and then look in to getting him once he's proven that he can do it again.

If you think he would improve our team then that's good enough for me. The fact you have seen him play on a regular basis is a big endorsement. I know that quite a few of those who contribute to this site have moved away from the West London area and whilst they remain loyal Rs fans they also now watch teams local to them. Maybe we should set up an area on this site where those who have attended a league or conference game and spotted a rough diamond could identify them and bring them to our attention. I'm sure that QPR must have representatives who read our comments and if we could help the club identify a star of the future then we all win.
