QPR 0-3 Middlesbrough:
Middlesbrough comfortably beat Queens Park Rangers 3-0 in the Sky Bet Championship on a cold and rainy day in West London.
Rangers named the same starting 11 which beat Burton Albion, which meant that Alex Smithies was in goal, the defence consisted of Darnell Furlong, Captain Nedum Onouha, Joel Lynch, Jack Robinson and Jake Bidwell. The midfield included Josh Scowen, Massimo Luongo and Luke Freeman. Whilst Conor Washington and Aramide Oteh led the line for Rangers.
In contrast Tony Pulis named a strong Middlesbrough side who are expected to be competing at the top end of the league table, this meant Randolph was in goal, a defence of Shotton, Ayala, Gibson and Friend. A midfield of Howson and Leadbitter and attack of Troare, Downing, Bamford and Assombalonga.
The game kicked off and in the early exchanges Rangers were the more dominate side with Jack Robinson coming close with a long range effort, but his effort drifted just wide of the post.
However as the game continued Middlesbrough managed to calm down and compose themselves and they never looked back and Adama Troare’s pace and physicality really started to cause the Rangers defence problems.
In the 24th minute former England international Stewart Downing found himself in space on the edge of the box and his shot was deemed to be blocked by referee Oliver Langford and he awarded a corner. From this resulting corner Grant Leadbitter was able to pick out Troare, who flicked the ball to Ayala who was able to head home from close range and put Middlesbrough 1-0 up.
After this goal Middlesbrough grew in confidence and became dominant and 10 minutes later left back George Friend found himself free on the edge of the box and unleashed a rocket of a shot which flew past the helpless Alex Smithies and put Middlesbrough into dream land with the score 2-0 to the visitors.
Rangers tried to claw something back into the game and used Bristol City’s famous tactic of putting a centre half up front and in our case Joel Lynch pushed forward, however this didn’t really seem to help us.
On the stroke of half time Conor Washington was picked out by Jack Robinson’s long ball, but he could only get a small touch onto the ball and Randolph easily collected it.
At the half time whistle the score was 2-0 to Middlesbrough. Rangers then made two changes with Matt Smith replacing Aramide Oteh and Bright Osayi-Samuel replacing Jake Bidwell.
Rangers pushed for something in the game, but luck just wasn’t on Rangers side. Matt Smith felt he was being fouled on numerous occasions, however the referee Langford waved away any claims for a penalty.
Middlesbrough seemed quite content with their 2-0 lead and didn’t seem threatened by the Rangers attacks, with Rangers opening up, it left them hugely vulnerable for the counter attack.
Youngster Eberechi Eze came on to try and create more opportunities in the game and this started to work as Darnel Furlong and Matt Smith both had close range headers which they should of done better with.
As the game started to die out Joel Lynch had a effort saved by Darren Randolph from the edge of the box and then minutes later Jack Robinson saw his diving header fly over the bar.
On the 85th minute Middlesbrough were able to counter attack through Troare’s pace and ultimately beat Robinson and slotted the ball home to make it 3-0 and seal the victory.
The clock was eventually wound down in front of an emptying Loftus Road and the full time whistle was blown.
Middlesbrough continue to look up the table and have their eyes set on a play off place, whereas Rangers despite their recent form are still looking over their shoulders at the relegation battle which is starting to heat up right behind them.
Player Ratings:
Alex Smithies 6- Smithies can’t really be blamed for the goals and didn’t really have much else to do in the game.
Darnell Furlong 6- A okay game for Furlong, who is obviously lacking the experience required against the big teams in the league.
Nedum Onouha 7- My man of the match today, Rangers look a lot more solid defensively with Onouha in the team and performed okay today in what was overall bad performance from Rangers.
Joel Lynch 6- Lynch did okay today considering he was pushed forward just before half time, looks comfortable on the ball however struggled with Middlesbrough’s pace.
Jack Robinson 6- Ranger’s first name on the team sheet at the moment, was unlucky with his effort early on in the game, got moved back to left back and looked uncomfortable against Troare’s pace.
Jake Bidwell 5- Substituted at half time and struggled against Middlesbrough’s pace.
Josh Scowen 6- Did everything that was asked of him, however was sacrificed when Rangers needed more creativity.
Massimo Luongo 5- Looked very sluggish and off the pace today and was moved further back after the introduction of Eze.
Luke Freeman 6- Did okay in patches, however his final ball seemed to be missing most of the game.
Conor Washington 6- Worked hard, but like normal for Washington his hard work never seems to pay off.
Aramide Oteh 5- Wasn’t as effective as he was against Burton and was substituted at half time for the more physical Matt Smith.
Substitutes:
Matt Smith 6- Came on and caused a nuisance but didn’t really affect the game that much.
Bright Osayi-Samuel 6- His pace caused Middlesbrough problems but again his final ball was missing.
Eberechi Eze 6- Looked very calm on the ball when he came and should have a big future at Rangers.
