Queens Park Rangers 1-0 Barnsley:
Ten men Queens Park Rangers managed to hold on to a crucial three points at home to Barnsley, despite midfielder Ryan Manning seeing red.
QPR made considerable changes from their last game against Bristol City, with the most notable change being the formation, with Rangers lining up in a traditional 4-4-2 style, compared to their usual 5-3-2. This meant Alex Smithies was in goal, the back four consisting of James Perch, captain Nedum Onouha, Joel Lynch and Jack Robinson. The midfield four included Josh Scowen, Jordon Cousins, Luke Freeman and Pawel Wszolek. Whilst Conor Washington and Matt Smith led the line for Rangers.
In contrast Barnsley lined up with Townsend in goal, a defence of Yiadom, Mills, Lindsay and Pinillos. A midfield of Moncur, Gardner, Williams and Hammill, whilst Moore and Bradshaw led the line for the Reds.
On a cold, wet and windy day in West London conditions weren’t perfect for football and as the game kicked off it became evident as to why. The game began very scrappy with very little action happening at either ends of the pitch.
Rangers seemed to have most of the possession; however Barnsley looked the more threatening.
Following a well worked set piece by Barnsley, Matt Mills had the first real opportunity of the game, when he found himself unmarked just inside the 6 yard box, however his effort went over the bar and the score remained 0-0.
Matt Smith then had Rangers first opportunity of the game, when he was picked out by Luke Freeman inside the box, but his effort went wide of the target.
But the most threatening piece of action came from Barnsley, when the former Wolves winger Adam Hammill found himself free on the edge of the box, after somehow breaking free from three Rangers defenders. His half volleyed shot caused Smithies problems however he was able to push it away for a corner.
The game then became very scrappy and lacked a huge amount of Championship quality, with both teams target men Matt Smith and Kieffer Moore looking the most likely to score.
The first half seemed to peter out and the groans around Loftus Road when one minute of injury time was displayed, explained the whole mood surrounding both teams first half performances.
The teams went in all square at the half time whistle.
As the second half kicked off Rangers came out looking the much better side and in the 48th minute Pawel Wszolek’s s cross picked out Matt Smith who was brought down in the box, Matt Smith felt this was a definite penalty however referee Tony Harrington waved play on, the ball fell to Josh Scowen on the edge of the box and he struck a curling effort past the tykes keeper to put Rangers 1-0 up against his old side. Obviously the celebrations from Scowen were muted out of respect for his previous employers.
Rangers started to grow in to the game after this goal and quite simply should put the game out of Barnsley’s reach. But on the 72nd minute substitute Ryan Manning who had only been the pitch a matter of minutes received a straight red card for his challenge on Matt Mills and Rangers were now simply trying to hold on to a precious three points.
Conor Washington, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Pawel Wszolek all had significant chances to put the game out of Barnsley’s reach, however they managed to squander all of the chances and this looked like something Rangers would regret.
Especially on the 87th minute as Swansea loanee Oliver McBurnie did well to pick out George Moncur and his effort looked like it was a late equaliser until Joel Lynch was able to get a last minute block in and deflect the ball away for a corner.
Rangers were able to wind down the clock and hold on for a precious three points against relegation rivals and in the process were able to stop the run of bad results which they recently incurred.
Player Ratings:
Alex Smithies 7- When called into action Smithies produced some fine saves, like he has done all season.
James Perch 6- On his return from injury Perch looked a bit unfit but that’s expected considering how long he was out.
Nedum Onouha 8- My man of the match today, I felt Onouha looked solid and organised our defence well, which allowed us to keep only our fourth clean sheet of the season.
Joel Lynch 7- Like Onouha looked very solid, but struggled against Moore’s physicality in the first half.
Jack Robinson 7- In his old position Robinson did well and found himself in lots of space.
Pawel Wszolek 6- Started the first half well and caused a lot of problems, but faded throughout the 2nd half.
Josh Scowen 7- In what would have been an emotional day for Scowen against his old club I felt he played well and took his goal exceptionally well.
Luke Freeman 6- This wasn’t one of Freeman’s best games for QPR however it also wasn’t his worse. He is just struggling to have the same impact as he did at the beginning of the season.
Jordon Cousins 5- Cousins gave the ball away on so many occasions and looked weak on the ball, his early booking didn’t help and was quite rightly substituted.
Conor Washington 7- Another typical display from Washington who works so hard, but doesn’t seem to get much reward for his effort, he should of finished one of his chances.
Matt Smith 6- Smith’s physical presence was important for Rangers, however as the game grew he became more tired and his impact lessened.
Substitutes:
Ryan Manning 4- Was substituted on and sent off almost straight away, for what was a reckless challenge.
Bright Osayi- Samuel 6- His pace allowed Rangers to catch Barnsley on the break, had opportunities to put the game out of sight.
Jake Bidwell 6- Came on to defend at left midfield and did well.
