Hey chaps
NWH, Celtic have not done too well in Europe, but they have not done badly either tbh. They suffer every season (because of the UEFA coefficient issue) from having to go through 3 qualifying rounds for the Champ League group stages, and then being seeded at best 3rd in the group, necessarily having two huge teams above them with 2 qualifying places available, an issue no English club (placed in pots 1 or 2) has to worry about.
Despite this they managed to draw with Man Citeh last season both at home and away (plus Borussia Monchengladbach); this season they were humped by PSG, but on that night PSG would have humped anyone, they were THAT good, and they should have at least drawn with Bayern at Parkhead, and beat Anderlecht away.
Bottom line, they are no better or worse than a mid-to-low EPL side who would be chucked into the same situation - take the likes of say Swansea or Bournemouth or Newcastle (a good equivalent there, Single ), stick them as 3rd seeds in the same groups (with the likes of PSG, Bayern, Man City, AC Milan, etc, above them) , and the results would be very similar.
Kingfisher, regarding the payment situation it is crazy stuff, as NWH mentioned; last season Celtic raked in about £5m (about £3m for being SPL champs and about £2m in TV league/cup revenue); compare that with the lowest EPL team Sunderland who raked in £100m in EPL placing/TV.
As for the ranking of the other clubs, they are substantially below Celtic in terms of position. Celtic will walk the league (again, zzz) because they are the only (mid-table) EPL equivalent side. In effect the SPL is made up of an EPL equivalent side, 1 or 2 mediocre Championship equivalent sides (Aberdeen and Rangers) and the rest (though Hibs are decent tbf). A bit like a league made up of say Bournemouth (Celtic), Forest & Wednesday (Aberdeen and Rangers), and a load of League 1 sides. Hence Celtic's 69 game unbeaten run.
Some teams may give Celtic a game on the odd occasion, like lower level English teams do to EPL sides in the FA Cup, but over a season the issue is not in doubt. Rangers raised their game on Sunday at their home ground (a mental place when Celtic visit - I've been!) and despite leading twice and having a man advantage for half of the rest still lost.
Despite the money situation, Celtic make up for it in other ways.
They have a really good scouting network, both domestically and foreign. They are expert in luring young up-and-coming youngsters from the non-top-4 European leagues and making them into even better players - e.g. Virgil Van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, etc; and they pinch (on-loan or buy) fringe players from Europe's top sides - e.g. Patrick Roberts, Odsonne Edouard. Because their budget (or lack of) over many seasons has forced them to get clever, they have got clever!
There is the lure of the name, trophies and European football - no contest if you are a reserve player at Man City, PSG, etc and you have the chance at Celtic in front of 60,000, or playing on a wet weekday in front of a couple of hundred punters. A further lure is development as a player; the training facilities at Lennoxtown are absolutely first rate - they want for nothing - up there on a par with Melwood or Carrington, and they have a good coaching set up.
And of course they have their pick domestically (94% of Scots footy fans support Celtic or Rangers, it doesn't matter where you live) - of youth players (they have youth training/development facilities all over Scotland), of cherry-picking players from other teams, pinching staff (they lured the current head of their youth set up and one of his coaches from Motherwell), etc. Another reason they are hated by many other Scottish teams fans.
