Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Bolton Wanderers:
Queens Park Rangers defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in what was a tightly contested game and Rangers claimed an important three points in their quest for Championship survival.
QPR made two changes from their previous defeat away at league leaders Wolves. Massimo Luongo and Matt Smith came back into the side, whilst Jordon Cousins and James Perch were dropped. This meant Rangers lined up with Alex Smithies in goal, a defence of Pawel Wszolek, captain Nedum Onuoha, Jack Robinson, Joel Lynch and Jake Bidwell. The midfield consisted of Massimo Luongo, Josh Scowen and Luke Freeman. Whilst Conor Washington and Matt Smith led the attack for Rangers.
In contrast Bolton lined up with Alnwick in goal, a defence of Little, Burke, Wheater, Beevers and Robinson. A midfield of Osede, Henry and Vela. Whilst Ameobi and Walker led the line for the trotters.
As the game kicked off, in front of a quiet and rather empty Loftus Road, Rangers started much the better side and had a lot of possession. Rangers then started to push forward and Jack Robinson ‘s long throws and Luke Freeman’s corners caused Bolton’s defence problems. This created many opportunities especially for striker Matt Smith however he was unable to finish any of his efforts.
Jack Robinson was able to creep in un marked at the far post, but his effort was well saved by former Manchester United trainee Ben Alnwick.
Rangers continued to press forward and despite the pressure he was under from the Bolton defenders Matt Smith was having a lot of success in the air, however he couldn’t keep his headed efforts on target.
Rangers then had the ball in the net as the Bolton defender sliced his clearance into his own goal, but Matt Smith made an effort to get to the ball and was in an offside position, so the goal was ruled out for offside.
Bolton started to get more of a footing in the game and Walker had an effort which was fantastically saved by Alex Smithies and the game remained goalless.
Jake Bidwell and Matt Smith had another couple of headed opportunities again, which were easily saved by Alnwick and the score remained 0-0 as the half time whistle approached.
As the second half kicked off Bolton started much the better side and David Wheater found himself free in the 6 yard box, however his header was pushed away by Smithies.
The game started to turn very scrappy after this, but in the 54th minute the games complexion completely changed as Mark Little was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Massimo Luongo.
10 minutes later Irish striker Paul Smyth replaced Jake Bidwell as Rangers really started to push for that all important goal and straight away Smyth’s pace made a huge difference.
In the 72nd minute Josh Scowen won a free kick on the left wing and Luke Freeman delivered an in swinging cross, this found Matt Smith who headed the ball back across the box and found Joel Lynch at the back post who was able to head the ball home and put Rangers 1-0 up in this all important game.
Rangers should of put the game out of sight when Nedum Onuoha crossed the ball back across the box and Joel Lynch was inches away from making it 2-0.
After the goal Rangers sat back and just tried to keep possession of the ball and as Bolton pushed forward to try and get an equaliser, Freeman, and Smyth were finding space to run in to.
As the game reached injury time Paul Smyth was able to break away from the Bolton defence and deliver a wonderful cross to Matt Smith, whose header finally found the back of the net and put Rangers 2-0 up and ultimately kill off any hope Bolton had of an equaliser.
Rangers saw out the remaining moments of the game and claimed 3 important points and moved further away from the relegation zone, whereas this result pushes Bolton into deeper trouble at the bottom of the Championship.
