Queens Park Rangers 1-0 Sunderland:
Queens Park Rangers eased past Sunderland to all but secure their Championship status, after full debutant Eberechi Eze slotted home to give the West London side all three points, on what was celebrated as QPR’s Community Day.
QPR made one change from their last outing at Loftus Road against Derby County, with Eberechi Eze replacing Conor Washington in the starting line-up. This meant that Alex Smithies was in goal, the defence was Darnell Furlong, Nedum Onouha, Jack Robinson and Jake Bidwell. The midfield consisted of Josh Scowen, Luke Freeman, Massimo Luongo and Eberechi Eze. Whilst Matt Smith and Paul Smyth led the attack for Rangers.
In contrast relegation threatened Sunderland lined up with: Steele, Matthews, Kone, O’Shea, Oviedo, Cattermole, Asoro, Williams, Ejara, Honeyman and Fletcher.
The game started in a very scrappy manor with neither side able to maintain possession of the ball, Rangers were able to win a few corners however these didn’t trouble an experienced Sunderland defence. Sunderland’s best effort of the half came from Ovie Ejara, however his effort was blocked by former Black cat Nedum Onouha.
In a first half which lacked any real opportunities or quality, Rangers looked the much more dominate side but they simply couldn’t create that one real opportunity.
It wasn’t until on the stroke of half time that Rangers really troubled the Sunderland defence, with Eze Luongo and Scowen seeing their efforts from the edge of the box blocked.
When the half time whistle blew the game was evenly matched with the score 0-0.
As the teams emerged for the second half Jack Robinson was replaced by Joel Lynch for what seems an injury to our potential player of the season.
Sunderland started the second half the much better side with Ejara and Fletcher seeing their efforts blocked from the edge of the box.
However in the 49th minute the game took a drastic turn as Sunderland goalkeeper Jason Steele came rushing out of his box to clear a long ball which was heading straight into Paul Smyth’s path, but he completely mistimed the ball and found himself trying to push the ball away with his hands, even though he was 5 yards outside of his box. This saw him receive a straight red card and Sunderland were down to ten men.
After a lengthy delay former R Lee Camp was between the sticks for Sunderland and straight away faced a Josh Scowen free kick from the edge of the box, this flew over the bar but Sunderland knew they had it all to do with ten men.
The sending off really seemed to benefit Eberechi Eze who was able to find more space and time on the ball and really started to effect the game and he went close with his left footed effort from the edge of the box.
In the 62nd minute Eze’s hard work paid off as he picked the ball up just inside the Sunderland half, he then played a 1-2 with Matt Smith and found himself free in the Sunderland box before he coolly converted past Lee Camp to put Rangers ahead.
The introduction of Bright Osayi-Samuel in the 72nd minute caused Sunderland’s defence many problems as he created a couple of opportunities which should of put the game to bed.
Matt Smith then had the ball in the back of the net, however he was ruled for offside and the score remained 1-0.
As the clock ticked down Rangers were hanging on, with Honeyman going close on a couple of occasions for Sunderland. The game was deep into injury time and Sunderland had numerous corners with Lee Camp even joining the attack, however Rangers stood firm and held onto their deserved win.
After this win Rangers are now 13 points clear of the relegation zone, whereas Sunderland are staring relegation straight in the face.
Players Ratings:
Alex Smithies 7- Smithies wasn’t really worked that hard, however what he did do he did well.
Darnell Furlong 6- Wasn’t very effective in the first half, but he grew into the game and defended well.
Nedum Onouha 7- Another solid performance from Onouha, whose experience is proving vital for Rangers.
Jack Robinson 6- Seemed to be carrying a knock for a lot of the first half and was rightly replaced at half time.
Jake Bidwell 7- Again another solid performance from Bidwell who seems a lot more comfortable in the left back position.
Josh Scowen 6- In terms of tackling Scowen looked really good, however his passing really let his game down.
Massimo Luongo 6- Luongo had a okay performance, he did the basics well, but he didn’t do anything spectacular.
Luke Freeman 7- He looked very comfortable on the ball and delivered some very threatening crosses. However needs to realise the ball quicker.
Eberechi Eze 8- The eventual match winner and was also my man of the match. I felt if Rangers were going to score today it was going to be through Eze.
Paul Smyth 7- Smyth wasn’t as lively as he usually is, as Sunderland defending well against him.
Matt Smith 6- It was a relatively poor performance from Smith, who didn’t really win the physical battle against the experienced John O’shea.

Joel Lynch 7- A good second half performance from Lynch who looked more comfortable in defence compared to attack.
Bright Osayi-Samuel 7- Samuel looked really quick and caused huge problems for Sunderland when he arrived on the scene.
Ryan Manning 6- Came on to shore the midfield up late on.
