Queens Park Rangers 4-2 Sheffield Wednesday:
Queens Park Rangers lit up Loftus Road with a dazzling display against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening in the Sky Bet Championship.
Going into the game Rangers made six changes from their defeat to Hull City on Saturday, with Alex Baptiste, Jack Robinson, Jordon Cousins, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Idrissa Sylla and Paul Smyth returning to the side. This meant Rangers lined up with Alex Smithies in goal, a defence of Darnell Furlong, Alex Baptiste, Jack Robinson and Jake Bidwell. The midfield consisted of Jordon Cousins, Josh Scowen, Luke Freeman and Bright Osayi-Samuel. Whilst Paul Smyth and Idrissa Sylla occupied the forward positions for Rangers.
In contrast Sheffield Wednesday lined up with: Wildsmith, Palmer, Lees, Pudil, Thorniley, Pelupessy, Jones, Reach, Forestieri, Lucas Joao and Nuhiu.
After an emotional tribute to former R’s captain and manager Ray Wilkins, the game kicked off and Rangers started the much better side with Luke Freeman seeing his effort from the edge of the box blocked.
However a mad 10 minutes was to come for Rangers, in the 8th minute the ball fell to teenage sensation Paul Smyth after good work by Idrissa Sylla and Smyth hit a wonderful shot with the outside of his foot which curled past the helpless keeper, putting Rangers 1-0 up.
Then 2 minutes later Jake Bidwell found himself in space on the edge of the box, his initial shot was saved, but the rebound fell straight back to him and he hit another curling effort which flew past the keeper and Rangers had scored 2 goals in the space of 2 minutes.
Rangers started to run riot and in the 15th minute Darnell Furlong crossed a wonderful ball into the box which found Sylla at the back post who headed home to make it 3-0 to the West London side with only 15 minutes gone.
These quick goals seemed to kill the first half as Rangers sat back and chants of ‘ole, ole’ rang round Loftus Road.
However as the game developed Atdhe Nuhiu’s physical presence became a thorn in Rangers sideand he had many efforts to draw a goal back for the Owls but he was denied on numerous occasions by Alex Smithies.
At the half time whistle the score was 3-0 to the home side.
When the second half kicked off it started similarly to the way the first half had finished, with Rangers controlling the possession.
On the 53rd minute Bright Osayi-Samuel created some space in the box for himself and was able to draw a foul from Tom Lees and Rangers were awarded a penalty. Idrissa Sylla stepped up and coolly converted to make the score 4-0.
This goal seemed to wake Sheffield Wednesday up and 8 minutes later Fernando Forestieri was able to pull one back for the visitors, with time starting to fade away for Sheffield Wednesday Nuhiu’s hard work was finally rewarded with a goal, as Liam Palmers cross picked him out and he was able to head past Smithies in the Rangers goal.
This caused a sense of panic in the Rangers camp and a game which seemed so comfortable for the R’s was almost thrown away, however Rangers stood strong and were able to wind the clock down and hold on to what was a well-deserved 3 points for the R’s.
Player Ratings:
Alex Smithies 8-Smithies pulled off some wonderful saves and had a really good battle with Nuhiu which Smithies eventually won.
Darnell Furlong 7- A good assist for the 3rd goal and he defended well throughout the game.
Alex Baptisite 7- Again defended well and won a lot of aerial battles.
Jack Robinson 9 – My man of the match today, he reads the game so well, just hope his contract will be renewed come the end of the season.
Jake Bidwell 8- Took his goal really well and again defended well.
Josh Scowen 7- Not one of Scowen’s best performances, however I feel the booking he received early on accounted for this.
Jordon Cousins 7- A okay performance from Cousins, he looked solid in midfield and didn’t give the ball away.
Luke Freeman 7- Freeman again played okay, if he releases the ball that second quicker he could of easily had 1 or 2 assists today.
Bright Osayi – Samuel 8- I felt Samuel caused their defence a huge amount of problems and he did well to win the penalty.
Paul Smyth 8- Smyth was the catalyst for the 10 minute madness early in the first half and after that he works so hard for the team.
Idrissa Sylla 8- His presence caused Sheffield Wednesday problems and he took his headed goal well and converted his penalty well.
Substitutions:
Matt Smith 6- Didn’t really affect the game.
Pawel Wszoleck 6- Didn’t really affect the game.
Ryan Manning 6- Didn’t really affect the game.
