Bringing together some of the posts from the site I thought I'd put together an article on the sacking of Ian Holloway. I will start by saying I think his sacking is extremely harsh.
We gave Holloway a 2 1/2 year deal; there must have been a plan set for his contract and he was surely meeting it as stoatey and Rosco Bosco have pointed out in their posts. The board can't really have expected a promotion push this past season can they?. And does it really matter if we finished 10th or 16th, they don't change where we start next season.
Some will say Holloway had time to sort things out but he only had 1 full season in charge!
In my eyes he deserved to have a crack at the last year of his contract. Then in 12 months time if there were really no sign of progress we could have parted ways. The fans would understand the need for change a bit more then. It would certainly have made more sense in 12 months if we'd had another season kicking around the bottom half than it does now. Then there would have been more of an argument that there had not been enough progress.
Look back at our pre-season predictions and we all pretty much expected what has occured over the last 12 months. Why have the board decided it wasn't acceptable? The majority in our poll actually thoughts we would finish lower than we actually did going for 17th to 21st. The fanbase are not currently unhappy, most have been accepting of the years of transition. Now the board have set themselves up for an unhappy fanbase and a lot of angst if things go south.
I keep seeing a mention of a poor style of play under Holloway but let's be honest we have been crap to watch for years, probably since our Taarabt promotion season. The football under JFH was worse than under Holloway. We actually scored 4 in a game twice recently which was exciting to watch. Things had improved in this area and all the while cutting the wage bill and bringing through young players.
I agree Holloways selections were shocking at times, but some could argue we were well clear of relegation and it was the ideal time to experiment?
Unless the owners are going to arm the new guy with a £10 million+ warchest I have no idea how any other manager can make us 20 points better off next season. We were light years away from a promotion push this year. I don't think any QPR fan thought a few days ago that we would be challenging for promotion next season. But now the owners have perhaps raised expectations, otherwise why have they bothered to sack Holloway?
If there is no money coming in to improve the squad and the new guy just has to work with what we have, then as kensalr said in his post we'll be back here in 12 months if we end up mid-table again.
As it stands we have no defence and if we lose Smithies and/or Luongo the new manager would have a squad heading for a relegation scrap.
Personally I thought QPR had learnt lessons from the past. All the talk for the past 18 months has been about 'stability'. It was even Tony Fernandes 'go to' word in his podcast interview last week, saying it over and over. The club was heading in a different direction. Yet now we are firing managers again and expecting bigger things as a result.
Holloway was doing his job and now we will never know if he could have taken us further.
It is a big decision. A risky decision. Is it the right decision? Only time will tell.
