The Sun are reporting that Birmingham manager Garry Monk will target QPR stopper Smithies as part of his squad overhaul ahead of his first full campaign in charge.
How are they going to get rid of Stockdale who was rumoured to be on £40000 per week?
We found out ourselves that big earners are impossible to shift.
The report suggests that Leeds are interested in Stockdale but I can't see them paying £40k/week though as they have a salary cap of £15k/week. Probably just lazy reporting because Stockdale is a Leeds fan.
All top tier clubs like a "home grown" 3rd choice keeper to help with squad quotas. I thought Smithies may have valued playing more but he will probably be on the highest wage of his career.
Never understood why his career never really quite took off when he left us same can be said about Luke Freeman always rated him massively as a keeper. and to see him as a 3rd choice now is such a waste had he been sat on their bench as an understudy would understand that more for me hes up there with the best for keepers for me
Seaman, Stejskal, Green, Dieng, Hucker the only 5 ive seen better at QPR in my time

Do agree Smithies was a great goalie and his move will not enhance what should have been a glorious career!

Alex Smithies has retired due to injuries
He is only 33.
Definitely one of our better goalkeepers of the past decade. I always felt a bit sorry for him that he left Huddersfield to join QPR thinking he was stepping up but they ended up going to the top flight and we've never been there since he first joined us!

What a shame. Decent keeper when with us. Had a knack of saving penalties if I remember correctly.
He was a decent keeper Very good a stopping penalties as pointed out 33 is very young for a keeper to retire from the game Hopefully he gets a job in coaching or something similar

Sad to hear he has been forced to retire. I rated him as a goalie, especially with direct shots as his reflex saves were really good. Wish him well.
