The trip to Germany ended with a 3 -0 defeat and another defender injured as Giles Phillips limped off just before half time. We started with a different XI to the one that started yesterdays game and it was good to see Charlie Owens getting a game. Hoffenheim are a decent team and you can never read too much into friendlies but to repeat what most have been saying for the last couple of years, we really do need a couple more decent defenders and a goal scorer.
I really hope that behind the scenes LF and his team are working to bring in the players we need or else this season is going to be another year of struggle.
It was more of the 'second string' so not an unexpected result.
It is more matches under the belt and McClaren will be learning a lot.
As you say stoatey hopefully the club can see what we can see and get the required bodies in over the next fortnight.
The basis of a good team is there to build on.
The defence looks (from the names) to be a little inexperienced so not too surprised. Sad to hear about Phillips and hope he makes a quick recovery. When Wheeler replaced him I wonder what impact that made upon the team dynamics...? Sad to read that Washington again was shooting over the bar. Whether this is a bad trait or indicative of his desperation to score (and thus trying too hard) I am not sure, but it is most unwelcome. Has Sylla actually got game-time on the tour?

According to reports, Sylla played the full 90 minutes in yesterday's 3-0 defeat. He started the first half alongside Washington and Smyth, then in the 2nd half he played alongside Smith and Oteh.

Ooops! I was just hoping that he had not scored because he did not play. Bang goes that hope stoatey! Now that is all the forwards used and little to show for it....

I hoped that this pre-season would have seen either Sylla or Washington start to bag a few goals and restore their confidence. Unfortunately it hasn't happened and I think that the club must now make a concerted effort to try and offload either Sylla or Washington and get in a replacement. Probably this easier said than done but we cannot carry 2 strikers who are not regular goalscorers. My preference would be to try and get rid of Sylla who can look really uninterested in games whereas Washington is much more of a team player and does at least put in some effort.
I agree at least one should go, but I am not sure which! Sylla does at least offer some 'poacher' goals, whereas Washington seems incapable of converting his superior work-rate into shots on target. Whenever I attend games I always try to observe the shooting practise at the end of the warm-up and it is usually unimpressive, with Washington the worst. Sylla does better, and the same applies in the matches. I am really sad that Conor Washington has not improved as I felt he would develop along the lines of Charlie Austin, but he has not.
I keep saying that Conor will come good, and I am sure he will at some point. The work rate and effort will pay off he just needs a run of goals to get his confidence up but the trouble is we need him to get going now not at some point in the future.
Washington has had long enough. He is a confidence player who never scores consistently and misses a lot of chances. Therefore confidence is generally low which means he misses a lot of chances. Repeat.
