QPR 1-2 Sheffield United:
A smart Sheffield United side overcome a 1-0 deficit to beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 in what was the R’s first game back at Loftus Road for this Sky Bet Championship season.
Rangers lined up with new number 1 Matt Ingram in goal, a defence of Osman Kakay, new recruit and captain Toni Leistner, Joel Lynch and Jake Bidwell. Massimo Luongo, Josh Scowen, Luke Freeman, Eberechi Eze and Paul Smyth completed the R’s midfield, whilst Idrissa Sylla led the line for the Hoops.
In contrast Sheffield United lined up with: Dean Henderson, Kieron Freeman, John Egan, Richard Stearman, Jack O’Connell, Enda Stevens, Mark Duffy, Chris Basham, John Fleck, Billy Sharpe and former R Leon Clarke.
The game started equal, with both sides creating a few opportunities, however neither team were unable to really test each other’s goalkeepers, with Luongo and Eze seeing their efforts comfortably saved by Henderson in the Blades goal.
As the first half continued, Rangers’ new number 10 Eze grew into the game and on the half hour mark he clinched his first goal of the new season. As good work from Luongo, found Eze who played the ball out wide to Bidwell, who’s cross was deflected back to Eze on the edge of the box. He unleashed a half volley which flew past the helpless Henderson, giving Rangers a somewhat fortuitous lead.
After the goal QPR were trying to see out the half, with the score at 1-0. But a bit of poor back tracking from the goal scorer Eze, allowed Freeman to get behind the defence and he pull the ball back across goal, for Billy Sharpe to tap home and give Sheffield United a deserved equaliser.
Rangers started the second half much like they finished the first, with plenty of possession of the ball but not really challenging the United defence. This allowed Sheffield United to grow in confidence with Clarke and Sharpe causing the R’s backline a huge amount of problems.
Sharpe was later replaced by David McGoldrick who within minutes won the Blades a penalty as Leistner and Lynch were adjudged to have pushed McGoldrick at the far post, he stepped up, sending Ingram the wrong way and giving his side the lead.
Rangers tried their best to get back into the game, with Eze and Luongo again having efforts on goal but Henderson wasn’t to be beaten and Sheffield United headed home with an important three points.
Player Ratings:
Matt Ingram 5: A nervy start for Ingram, whose distribution caused Rangers a few problems, Rangers’ goalkeepers will be in for a tough season after the departure of Alex Smithies.
Osman Kakay 8: My man of the match, defended very well, was only caught out of position a couple of times, but looked a huge attacking threat all game.
Toni Leistner 7: A strong start from the German, but looked vulnerable up against pace.
Joel Lynch 6: A typical Lynch performance, he didn’t do much wrong, but didn’t do a huge amount to influence the game.
Jake Bidwell 7: A good performance from Bidwell who looked very fit and a lot more comfortable back in the left back position.
Josh Scowen 7: Scowen saw a lot of the ball and initiated most of our attacks, but lacked support.
Massimo Luongo 6: A average performance from Luongo, who seems to be lacking in first team sharpness.
Luke Freeman 6: A okay performance from Freeman, he looked sharp in the first half and linked up well with Eze, but disappeared as the second half progressed.
Paul Smyth 5: A poor performance from Smyth, his first touch seemed to let him down, he looked a bit lost on the wing, I feel would be more suited up front with Sylla.
Eberechi Eze 7: Eze looks so cool and confident on the ball, he is a joy to watch with the ball. But his defensive work let him down today.
Idrissa Sylla 6: Good work rate from Sylla, throughout the game, but failed to show any real quality throughout the game and never really looked like scoring.
Substitutes:
Bright Osayi-Samuel 6: Looked positive when he came on and his paced caused their defence some problems.
Matt Smith 5: Didn’t really make an impact when he came on.
Conor Washington 5: Didn’t really have the time to make any impact at all.
