Queens Park Rangers 0-1 Norwich City:
A second half Teemu Pukki goal, ensured all three points travelled back to East Anglia, on what was an evening to forget for Queens Park Rangers.
Going into the game Rangers made three changes from the recent victory over London rivals Millwall on Wednesday evening, this meant Alex Baptiste, Josh Scowen and Tomer Hemed all returned to the R’s line up.
Rangers started the game on the back foot, with Norwich creating the more threatening opportunities, with Pukki going close for the visitors. QPR eventually were able to grow into what was a very dull first half, with Hemed and Nahki Wells linking up well, only for Wells’ shot to go straight into the path of Tim Krul in the Canaries goal.
The second half continued in the same pattern as the first, with the R’s having a huge amount of possession of the ball, but were simply unable to carve any real threatening chances in front of goal, with Jake Bidwell’s looping effort not really troubling Krul at all.
Norwich took the lead in the 70th minute, Marco Stiepermann’s deflected cross, picked out Pukki, who was able to cleverly chest the ball past the helpless Joe Lumley in the R’s goal. Rangers tried to push for an equaliser, but it was not to be. Luke Freeman’s shot was tipped over the bar, by an alert Krul, Massimo Luongo had a shout for a penalty late on, which was turned down by the referee and substitute Bright Osayi-Samuel saw his effort fly wide of the target.
This meant Norwich were able to hold on to all three points and end Rangers’ recent surge in form.
Player Ratings:
Joe Lumley 6: Wasn’t really tested in the R’s goal, dealt well will in what was difficult conditions.
Alex Baptiste 6: His pace meant he was caught out of position on numerous occasions.
Toni Leistner 6: A quiet performance from Leistner, who didn’t really do much, was eventually substituted as Rangers pushed for that equaliser.
Joel Lynch 6: Was caught out for the goal, in what was one of Lynch’s poorest performances of the season.
Jake Bidwell 6: Again, like Baptiste his lack of pace, meant he struggled against quick winger.
Josh Scowen 5: A poor performance from Scowen, who lost the battle in midfield.
Massimo Luongo 7: A more positive performance from Luongo, who had a good shout for a penalty waved away.
Eberechi Eze 6: After Wednesday’s fantastic performance, it was clear to see Eze isn’t suited to playing out wide.
Luke Freeman 7: My man of the match, as Freeman looked the most likely to score for the R’s, however held on to the ball for too long on numerous occasions.
Nahki Wells 6: A bright performance from Wells, who’s link up play with Hemed caused Norwich’s defence problems.
Tomer Hemed 6: A okay display from Hemed, with his link up play bringing many other players into the game.
Substitutes:
Bright Osayi-Samuel 6: His pace caused problems when he came on.
Matt Smith 5: Didn’t really have time to affect the game.
Jordon Cousins 5: Again, didn’t have time to affect the game.
