QPR 1-0 Aston Villa:
It was a night to remember for the R’s as we capped off what was a fine month, with a 1-0 win over promotion hopefuls Aston Villa.
Rangers named the same side for the third successive game and this consistency is seeming to have a positive impact on results.
In a game which needed no introduction to the R’s faithful thanks to the presence of John Terry, QPR started the game on the back foot, with Villa’s John McGinn having the first real effort in the match.
The Super Hoops were able to grow into the game with Massimo Luongo and Luke Freeman linking up well before his shot was well saved by Orjan Nyland in the visitor’s goal. Rangers continued to push for the opening goal, but it was Villa he seemed the more threatening as Jack Grealish’ long range set piece seemingly fooled everyone before striking the foot of the post and safely going out for a goal kick.
However, with half time approaching the R’s took the lead through Pawel Wszolek as Tomer Hemed was fouled before the referee played advantage as the ball fell to midfielder Geoff Cameron who played a wonderful ball to Wszolek who’s first time shot cannoned off the bar and over the line and eventually the goal was given thanks to the help of goal line technology.
Going into the second half Villa flexed their attacking muscles, with the arrival of Yannick Bolasie but the R’s defended resolutely. Substitute Josh Scowen had QPR’s best chance of the second half but his edge of the box effort was tipped over the bar by Nyland. Ultimately despite Villa’s huge amount of possession they were unable to carve out any real opportunities.
Which mean Rangers were able to keep hold on to what was a valuable three points against a side who have spent big this summer but are struggling at the wrong end of the table, whilst the R’s continued their fine run of form going into what looks a tough run of fixtures.
Player Ratings:
Joe Lumley 7- Made some good saves, but looked under pressure from a couple of Aston Villa set pieces. But kept his 3rd clean sheet in a week.
Angel Rangel 8- Made some important last-ditch tackles, dealt with the attacking presence of Bolasie really well.
Toni Leistner 8- Another solid performance from Leistner who is getting better and better every game he plays for the R’s.
Joel Lynch 8- Again like Leistner seems to be improving every game he plays this season and Friday night’s game was no different. The partnership with Leistner looks formidable.
Jake Bidwell 7- A solid performance from Bidwell, who like Rangel dealt with Villa’s wide presence really well.
Geoff Cameron 7- Despite going off early, got a good assist for the goal and really helped give a physical presence to the R’s midfield.
Massimo Luongo 8- Someone who didn’t start the season off too well, seems to be getting fitter and fitter every week and performances have drastically improved after what was a tough summer for him.
Luke Freeman 9- My man of the match and someone who was constantly involved during the game and looked our main attacking threat.
Eberechi Eze 8- Looked solid in midfield and looked an attacking threat, has really added the defensive side to his game this season and Friday’s game exemplifies that.
Pawel Wszolek 8- Took his goal well and put in a good performance, causing their defence a lot of problems.
