QPR 2-3 Hull City:
It was an afternoon to forget for QPR in W12 as visitors Hull City ran out 3-2 winners despite a late surge from the R’s.
Going into this game Rangers remained unchanged for the second consecutive game, which meant Nahki Wells led the line for the Super Hoops.
In contrast, visitors Hull made two changes from their defeat last time out at home to Nottingham Forest, with Dan Batty and striker Frazier Campbell returning to the side.
Despite a vast difference in form between both sides it was the ‘out of form’ Hull who started the brighter side and within 6 minutes Jarrod Bowen produced a fine effort on goal from the edge of the box, leaving keeper Joe Lumley helpless in the R’s goal and giving the away side an early lead.
Rangers pushed for an instant equaliser, with Massimo Luongo having a weak opportunity saved. But on the 22nd minute it was the visitors who doubled their lead as Markus Henriksen headed home from a Bowen corner.
QPR were able to get an instant response as Pawel Wszolek linked up with Angel Rangel before slotting the ball home to immediately half the deficit for the home side.
Despite what was a poor half for the R’s, they looked to push for a equaliser before the half time whistle, with Wells and Joel Lynch both having efforts to make it 2-2. But it was Rangel’s speculative effort which cannoned back off the post which went closest for the Super Hoops.
After the half time break Rangers continued to try and push for an equaliser but a accumulation of sloppy play and just a bad day at the office caused the home side to grow in frustration.
On the 69th minute Bowen doubled his goal tally for the game, seemingly putting the visitors out of sight. After breaking the offside trap Bowen’s initial effort was well saved by Lumley, but the rebound fell straight to the attacker allowing him to poke the ball home into the empty net.
Rangers tried to get back into the game but Matt Smith’s effort flew over the bar and in the 92nd minute Luke Freeman was able to bundle the ball home from substitute Bright Osayi-Samuel’s cross. But it was too little too late for the R’s as Hull head back to Yorkshire with all three points., ending what has been a fine run of form from Steve McClaren’s men.
Player Ratings:
Joe Lumley 6: Was unlucky with the goals and wasn’t called into much more action.
Angel Rangel 5: Struggled against Hull’s attacking pace, was unlucky with his effort but was rightly substituted.
Toni Leistner 5: A poor display from the big German.
Joel Lynch 5: Another poor display from a defender, Lynch made many mistakes today, some of which ultimately cost the R’s.
Jake Bidwell 7: My man of the match today, showed good communication and for periods looked our most attacking threat.
Geoff Cameron 6: A okay performance from Cameron, he won some important last-ditch challenges. Was substituted for a more attacking presence.
Massimo Luongo 6: A average performance from Luongo, who struggled to find any rhythm today.
Pawel Wszolek 6: Took his goal well and linked up well in the first half, but didn’t have much of an impact after half time.
Luke Freeman 6: Faded in and out of the game and his set pieces were poor.
Eberechi Eze 5: Really didn’t have an impact on the game at all today.
Nahki Wells 6: Struggled playing as the lone striker against a physical Hull defence.
Substitutes:
Matt Smith 5: Missed his big chance when he came on.
Tomer Hemed 6: Made a slight attacking difference when he came on.
Bright Osayi-Samuel 6: looked threatening when he arrived, perhaps the change was a bit too late.
