QPR 2-1 Leeds United: FA Cup 3rd Round
For the first time in 22 years Queens Park Rangers will be in the draw for the 4th round of the FA Cup without the assistance of a replay after a 2-1 victory over Championship leaders Leeds United.
Going into the game both sides made numerous changes, most noticeably Aramide Oteh and Bright Osayi-Samuel came into the side for Nahki Wells and Pawel Wszolek respectively to lead the R’s attack with Eberechi Eze and Luke Freeman.
Leeds started the brighter side with Tyler Roberts having an instant impact on the game with his long-range shot beating Matt Ingram before striking the right post before trickling across the line and striking the left-hand side post and going safely out of play.
Following this Rangers picked themselves up and the pace of Oteh, Eze and Osayi-Samuel started to cause an inexperienced Leeds defence a huge amount of problems. Oteh and Jake Bidwell had QPR’s first real chances of the game but these were well saved by Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Whites goal.
In the 23rd minute Rangers dominance finally prevailed as Bidwell drew a challenge from Leif Davis inside the box which was adjudged a foul by the referee and Oteh stepped up to convert the spot kick to score only his second ever professional goal and first at Loftus Road.
Following the restart, the visitors had a route straight back into the game as Lewis Bakers shot was saved by Ingram but he could only parry the shot straight into the path of Aapo Halme and parity was instantly restored.
The pulsating game continued to be end to end with both sides having opportunities but at the half time whistle the score remained 1-1.
Following the break, the half started much like the previous one had finished with both sides throwing everything forward and seemingly looking to avoid an unwanted replay up at Elland Road.
Jordon Cousins had the most noticeable effort of the early exchanges of the second half as his bursting run and long-range shot was expertly tipped onto the post from the youngster Peacock-Farrell.
In the 75th minute Bidwell had his close-range header tipped away by the busy keeper, but from the resulting corner Bidwell met Freeman’s inswinging corner and headed home to give the R’s a deserved lead.
Despite some late Leeds pressure, it was the R’s who looked more likely to seal the win. As Freeman’s excellent free-kick somehow was kept out by the post.
QPR held on to what is a historic victory at Loftus Road and for the first time in two decades and are now eyeing up a famous fourth-round tie.
Player Ratings:
Matt Ingram 6: Very nervy in front of the Rangers crowd, the goal epitomised that, but pulled off some good saves late on.
Osman Kakay 6: Looked good going forward and linked up well with Osayi-Samuel but Leeds’ pace caused him some defensive trouble.
Darnell Furlong 8: A very experienced display from Furlong who helped Kakay out a lot.
Grant Hall 7: A slow start from Hall but he grew into the game and his calmness on the ball has been missed.
Jake Bidwell 8: Another excellent display from Bidwell, deservedly grabbed the match winner.
Josh Scowen 8: Again, a great display from Scowen who has improved every game since returning to the side.
Jordon Cousins 6: A shaky performance from Cousins who fades in and out of games, a good run and shot early in the second half.
Luke Freeman 8: A experienced display from one of our most mature outfield players, combined well with Eze.
Eberechi Eze 8: One of Eze’s better performances of the year, who seemed to enjoy playing with Oteh and Osayi-Samuel.
Bright Osayi-Samuel 9: My man of the match today, his pace caused Leeds so many problems and most of Rangers’ attacking threats came from Osayi-Samuel.
Aramide Oteh 8: A great performance from Oteh, took his penalty really well which showed a lot of nerve and courage.
Substitutes:
Matt Smith 6: Not on long enough.
Ilias Chair 6: Again, not on long enough to affect the game.
Pawel Wszolek 6: Again, arrived onto the pitch really late on.
