With the international break taking up the next 2 weeks and only 9 games left of this season I thought it was worth us starting to look towards next season.
I know we still have 9 games left but we are 12 points from the top 16 and 15 above the bottom 3. The rest of this season is ultimately about trying to secure a top half finish and maintain confidence going into the next campaign.
We need to consider who we need to stay and who will go.
CONTRACTS
Lee Wallace, Joe Lumley, Geoff Cameron, Tom Carroll and Charlie Owens are out of contract.
Would you keep any of them?
Personally I think I would keep Wallace but only if he accepted a greatly reduced wage. He has been a lot better recently but there is no way he should be one of the highest earning players.
I would keep Lumley as our backup but I imagine he will want to play first team football at this stage of his career.
Cameron has had his day.
Carroll is worth another year as a backup, especially as it appears he is on one of the lowest wages in the team.
Owens is a tough one to call as he's unproven. I actually think the club will give him another year to try and stake his claim.
LOANS
I think it is safe to say that everybody wants the 4 loan players to stay.
We have a view to a permanent move for both De Wijs and Field.
Austin is out of contract at West Brom so will be available for free. That will simply come down to wages and whether his desire to be at QPR outweighs the money he will be offered elsewhere.
Johansen has a year left on his Fulham deal. I imagine our chances on signing Johansen hinge largely on whether Fulham come back down. If they are relegated I think this deal becomes a lot less likely. Even if they stay up he will command a decent fee and will have other clubs sniffing around.
OTHERS
Can we keep hold of the likes of Dieng, Dickie and Chair?
Where do we need to strengthen?
Amos coming back will be like a new signing once he gets fit.
Masterson has sadly had his development hindered by getting injured out on loan, so will probably find himself out on loan again
George Thomas is still a bit of an unknown after an injury hit season.
Will Shodipo fit into the current shape and be given further opportunities?
I think we need to get Kelman and Armstrong loans in League 1/2 to see what they can do and to get them more first team experience.
I would like to see us offload Hamalainen, who I don't think will ever make the grade.
SUMMARY
Overall, this is the first summer in a while where I predict there won't be wholesale changes.
The nucleus of the team and the key men will hopefully stay the same next season
I know there is a big "IF" around whether we can keep our key men and sign the loan players permanently, but if we can it should be a summer of continuity and that bodes well for next season.
Our hands are a bit tied in terms of other movement in some positions because to sign a new striker we'd probably need to sell Bonne. And there won't be many takers. We have Hamalainen ( ) and Kakay 4 year deals which somewhat influences how much we can spend on replacing the full backs. A lot may say we need a new right back but with Kane and Kakay under contract is that realistic unless somebody buys one, which is again pretty unrealistic.
We will need to replace Cameron should he leave, especially if we intend to stick with 3 centre backs.
