So last season I didn't do a great job of finishing my points gained/dropped table...basically we started winning in January and I stopped caring!
I'm going to try again this season and I've created the table ahead of time so hopefully it will be easier to keep up to date.
Here is the idea:
24 hours after each match, when we've all had a chance to calm down, I'll post a poll asking you guys if you thought we got the result we deserved, whether we dropped points we should have gained or gained points we should have dropped.
Folks have a different opinion on these sorts of things, but here is how I make the judgement
Points Gained: This really doesn't happen very often does it!? I would award us unexpected points gained when:
1. We are being dominated by the opposition and a loss or draw looks the only possible result and someone on the opposing team has a complete brainfart, makes a terrible mistake and we capitalise on the error
2. We are being dominated by the opposition and a loss or draw looks the only possible result and then out of nowhere we get an incredibly lucky/fluky goal
3. We are being dominated by the opposition and a loss or draw looks the only possible result and then the ref gives us a penalty in error (Do we have VAR this season!?)
Points Dropped: Unfortunately this seems to happen more often, but we should avoid talking about points dropped just because we lost or drew. Generally being shit and having a bad game is not a reason to award points dropped imo, otherwise every game lost or drawn would count as points dropped. I would award points dropped when:
1. We are dominating a game and on course to win or draw but then either through individual error or general team naivety/loss of concentration gift our opponents a win or draw against the run of play.
2. Managerial error, like making bad substitutions, changing tactic/formations in a way that clearly change things for the worse.
If the opposition score a fluky goal or the ref screws us with a pen I would not mark this as points dropped because you can't blame the team for these outcomes.
The purpose of this table is to hold the team accountable over the season, so at the end we can see what difference, if any, it would have made if we hadn't dropped/gained a certain number of points...make sense?
As an example, last season I stopped updating after week 20 by which time we had more or less agreed that we had dropped 9 points which we shouldn't have. Add that to the 69 points we ended up with and we would have finished on 77 points the same as Bournemouth in 6th!
COME ON U RRRRRRRR's
