No why would it the more competition the better. He is another who hasn't had a chance to prove himself. Yet we allow WASHINGTON 88 games for 13 goals. Send him on loan to Pompey.

Both Smyth and Manning should be pushing for first team starts at LR. Having said that, at least Portsmouth aren't relegation rivals.

He does need more first team football and it does seem a bit counter intuitive to loan in players and push out your own young players but given our position needs must and if he won't be playing - which seems likely - then this seems the correct decision.
Looks like I'm in the minority; but if true I think it stinks.
Ok, it's just an enquiry... BUT if either R's are touting him out for a loan or we actually let him go out on loan then our club has serious issues to answer to.
Firstly, Smyth is in that rarified atmosphere of players at out club who regularly plays well and almost always puts a shift in
Also, he actually looks dangerous with the ball at his feet - again a rare commodity (#WashingtonBarnDoorBanjoCow'sBackside #SyllaWhirlygig).
And we need a stronger squad - not just a stronger first eleven. 50+ games per season (even with our cup record!) + injuries + dips in form...
But, perhaps most concerning, he is exactly (like Manning) the type of player that apparently SM was brought in to develop - we have been repeatedly told by SM himself and the board. The reason why Ollie was unceremoniously dumped. The long-term vision, developing our own, the key to financial stability and players the fans could identify with as one of our own. 'Believe', 'Keep the faith', 'Have patience' we keep getting told, that vision. Not just, season after season, changing managers who then want to shift one lot of aging players with no/limited upside to replace them with their own bunch of aging players with no/limited upside.
Of course, it hasn't happened yet.

I am with you Rosco, I thought he was a cracking player last season and not even given a chance this year. I can only think its an exercise to balance the books.
Totally agree Rosco Bosco re bringing in McClaren to develop players such as Smyth & Manning (and hopefully Eze)! If they go out on loan that reduces our options (when the normally quality and consistent midfield is struggling) and leaves little cover for injuries.
Smyth is a very exciting prospect but if he is not part of McClarens first team plans then it seems obvious to send him out on loan. Its got to be better for him to play first team football in League One rather than U23 football in the Development League. I believe he is currently out with a minor injury anyway so this might scupper any immediate plans.

I like Smyth but just still cannot see him making it at this level. He cannot play up front on his own and never seems comfortable on the wing so he probably doesn't fit into McClaren's plans.
